Booting to Wallpaper (No Explorer)

After scanning with MB i removed some 1600 instances of spyware and rebooted to find explorer not starting. i tried to run it from the task manager and i get the following error: 'the file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel"

Anyone seen this before? any solution other that being at the machine. currently i'm connected remotley to the PC.
