Executing Malwarebytes Software from a Flash Drive

Is it possible to start the Malwarebytes free program from a flash drive and choose to scan the main hard drive on the desktop computer? Can I also initiate any fixes from the flash drive?

I have two desktops right now that have serious problems. The anti-virus programs haven't been able to fix it so far. Whenever I try to double-click on any program on the computer it opens a window and asks me what program do I want to choose to open it with, none of which seem to be working.

I am not sure if I am giving enough information here, so please let me know if I need to be more specific. Thanks in advance for any help. I am new to this type of problem.

At the moment, scanning from a USB drive, like portable applications, is not possible.
