Do I have a virus?

Ken G

Recommended Posts

I've recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP3 on a new hard drive after a crash and reinstalled my programs etc from a back up.

Now every time I boot I get a message that says that another application or user is using normal.dot, then asks if I want to save a new normal.dot. If I look in Windows Task Manager I can see that Winword.exe is running but I have no idea why. As well as the normal.dot mystery, I also get a window saying Powerpoint has a problem and needs to close. I have no idea why Powerpoint would be trying to open at start up. I've looked everywhere I can think of for traces of Word and Powerpoint in the start process and can't find anything. I've also uninstalled Office 2003, then deleted any remaining office folders. After doing this I rebooted and the problem did not occur.

I reinstalled Office 2003, and then shut down without opening any office program. On reboot the problem reappeared. Does this sound like a virus? I updated and ran MBAM and it found nothing. Running the detect and repair option under the Office application help menu did not fix the problem. (I also did not have to activate Office even though it was a fresh install ??. It said it was already activated.)

Well I don't see anything obvious there that would be restarting Office or PowerPoint. Not a typical indication of infection but if you think you may have one or if your also having some other signs of infection then it's best to follow the directions below to have someone help assist you in Malware detection and removal. If this is just an MS Office issue then perhaps someone here like Exil360 can review an AutoRuns log with you to see if they can track it down.

We don't work on Malware removal in the general forums.

Please print out, read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.

One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.

After posting your new post make sure under options that you select Track this topic and choose one of the Email options so that you're alerted when someon has replied to your post.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org

Thanks for looking. I did another uninstall of Office 2003 then went looking for remnants (I also had Office XP and 2007 installed at other times) I removed all traces I could find, reinstalled, rebooted and the problem was there again. I finally found two addins in the HK Current Users registry entries for Word and Powerpoint relating to Omnipage SE. I renamed those two registry entries and rebooted but still the problem remained, with new registry entries being created with the addins back, so I deleted the Omnipage program and that fixed the boot up appearance of Word and Powerpoint. I haven't reinstalled Omnipage - maybe later....

Thanks for the update. The funny thing with mine was neither Word nor Powerpoint had any add-ins listed in the applications themselves. It was just that I saw the references to Omnipage in the addins folder (if that's the right word) in the registry entries for Word and Powerpoint. The only way I could see to fix my problem was to delete Omnipage.

Updating and/or reinstalling OmniPage might allow you to keep it installed but hopefully without this error/issue any more. Since you had to pay for OmniPage I'd say it's worth trying, and now that you know the source of the issue, if it does happen again, you should contact their support as they may have a fix for it.

As it happens my Omnipage SE came free with a Canon scanner, but it had been there for about two years prior to this and not caused any problems. Something went wrong when I reinstalled all my "stuff" from a back up after a hard disk failure, That's when the normal.dot and Powerpoint failure messages started to appear. I'll probably reinstall it again at some point, but its something I rarely use, so there's no urgency.
