Unable to boot

Recommended Posts

Trying to do a repair on my girlfriend's laptop. Not entirely familiar with its hardware configuration, so if there's anything you need to help you'll need to tell me how to find out. It's an old Dell Inspiron 600 machine running Windows XP.

She's known of a virus issue on her machine for some time, but has simply tried to work around it rather than repairing it. Internet Security 2009 popups would obscure almost anything she attempted to do. I'd tried to recommend running MBAM to her, but it took some time before she decided to deal with it.

When she did, she ran both Spybot S&D and MBAM, back to back. Both reported items that could not be removed without a restart. When she restarted her machine after the programs finished, the laptop could no longer finish booting.

Any attempt at this point to start Windows results in a blue STOP screen, with the standard message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x83710BCB, 0xF7B7A69C, 0xF7B7A398 )

More worrying to me, attempting to boot into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt results in a similar message.

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDKS /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7B46528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 )

Any help on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. MBAM -did- run, so the log should still be stored on the machine, but I currently don't know how to recover it.

Thanks for any help.

ok great please do the following.

Download RC.ISO and burn it to a cd as an ISO image. You may need a burning toy like ISO Recorder to do this...be sure to get the version for your operating system.

Once you have burned this as an ISO image, insert the CD into the drive, and then restart the computer. Watch for the prompt to "Press any key to boot from cd" and press the spacebar when you see it. You may have to change the boot priority in BIOS Setup to accomplish this...we'll cross that bridge if we get to it.

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console...by number (usually 1)

When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If you have not set an administrator password, leave it blank and just press "Enter".

At the Recovery Console command prompt, type ren C:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys atapi.vir then hit enter.

At the next line type this copy C:\Windows\system32\dllcache\atapi.sys C:\windows\system32\drivers\ then hit enter.

Then it should say one file(s) copied.

If it does then type exit then the computer will restart.

======================================

If it get's into windows again do the following.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs

    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe

    /md5start

    eventlog.dll

    scecli.dll

    netlogon.dll

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

====================

Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here

  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED

  • Sections

  • IAT/EAT

  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)

  • Show All (don't miss this one)

  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

ok that just means that the file is missing please type this command then :

copy C:\Windows\system32\dllcache\atapi.sys C:\windows\system32\drivers\ then hit enter.

Then it should say one file(s) copied.

If it does then type exit then the computer will restart.

Let me know if that works.

Having problems getting the program to run all the way through. It looks like it's making some good progress, but then seems to lock up. The IS2010 popups are several layers deep and continual - I can't keep them closed long enough for OTL to run all the way through. Is that causing a problem?

Yes that will cause a problem please do it in safe mode if you can that malware will stop the tools from running as well.

*Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1

Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
