several anti-malware apps at once

No that is not necessarily true. First, what do you mean by all in the Start Menu?

Not all protection programs contain resident protection, and not all types of resident protection conflict with one-another.

Do you have an actual malware problem? That is what this forum is for. We have other forums for general questions.

In other words, all anti-malware apps running at the same time from bootup. However, I understand that Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntispyware and SpywareBlaster are excellent products that should run together no problem, so I think I'll try that.

Not all protection programs contain resident protection...

I don't understand. By "resident protection", do you simply mean "on the same machine"?

Do you have an actual malware problem?

Yeah, I do have a malware problem, but since it's a rootkit in the MBR which was bundled with a bunch of extremely severe cohorts (11 viruses and 3 Trojans), and it later spawned or admitted another such virus, I'm just gonna reformat the disk and start over, regardless of what anybody recommends to the contrary. I'll look for a more appropriate forum at this website to post my questions about malware prevention. Thank you.

Keep in mind that the Start Menu is not the same as startup, nor is it the same as the tray icons next to the clock.

By resident protection, I mean active protection against malware. The free versions of MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware do not have resident protection since you can only scan with them. The paid versions do have resident protection and should not be run at the same time. SpywareBlaster is passive protection and complements resident protection programs.

Why is that? We can try to clean up the infections..
