If I have MBAM Pro set to NOT start with windows, I see that mbamservice .exe is present in Task Manager.

Why is that?

Can someone explain the three processes to me and what they do?

mbam.exe

mbamgui.exe

mbamservice.exe

I thought that I would see none of them in Task Manager when I set the program to NOT start with Windows.

Greetings mynorgeek :)

mbamservice.exe is present at startup in case you wish to start the Protection Module at any point because it has to be running first for protection to start. If you aren't using the Protection Module at all then you can safely set the service to Disabled in the Services control panel.

As for what the various programs are and what they do, here is a brief description:

  • mbam.exe - This is the scanner and primary user interface for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and its settings.
  • mbamgui.exe - This is the tray module that runs in usermode to allow access to the Protection Module by the currently logged on user.
  • mbamservice.exe - This is the System level service that is the backbone of the Protection Module. It runs as System instead of the current user to allow it to both work against malware and run with the highest privelages even when protection is running in a limited user account.
