Another hijack victim

HI MWB,

Thanks for all the posted advice and tools already provided. I got nabbed by the Live PC Guard hijack, and successfully removed most of the offending items. However, I still am getting some random redirects from time to time, and did have trouble regaining control over Task Manager, although I seem to have it now. I ran OTL, and GMER per the instructions. GMER completed the scan with a message that nothing was found, but I've attached the OTL and EXTRAS outputs. (note I've XXX'ed out some personal info). Any help would be most appreciated!

Hello alvie666

Welcome to Malwarebytes.

=====================

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1

Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop

Download Mirror #1

Download Mirror #2

  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Hi Kahdah,

I believe we have the culprit! Eset found:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\1fa0e7c\LP1fa0.exe a variant of Win32/Kryptik.CHE trojan deleted - quarantined

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Win32/Qhost trojan cleaned by deleting (after the next restart) - quarantined

I'll continue to monitor for the issue, but it looks good.

Previously when navigating to google.com, I would be prompted to verify that "I'm Human" but now I'm not, so I suppose that my machine is not doing it's bidding, which may include:

* organize a DoS (denial of service) attack on a server

* increase traffic to his or her site in order to increase advertising value

* attract potential virus victims

Thanks again and MWB Rules!

Ok great let check for any leftovers:

  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

===============Update Java===============

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
