Will reinstalling or using Symnatec PC Restore clear any viruses or rootkits...

Recommended Posts

My computer was infected with various viruses which appeared to have been removed by McAfee and Malwarebytes. However some things could not be removed. I wrote for help last week but as of today I have gotten no response.

In the process of gathering information, I tried to going into safe mode and got and impenetrable BSOD. My only choice was to reinstall my XP. My Dell system did not come with a disk but had the Symantec PC restore function to restore to the original installation.

My question is this: can I be confident that this removed everything including those rootkits, corrupted files and hidden viruses?

Thanks!

Those items you could not remove were more than likely still present on your system. You were going to need the help of the Experts in the HJT section to complete the full removal of the malware. They are backuped up in there as they are helping quite a few people with infections.

When you went to safe mode (the malware was probably disabling your safe mode) the malware caused your BSOD and may have modifed some of your windows files causing a reinfection.

If you did a system restore back to factory default, then you are more than likely have a clean computer now. When you do a factory restore, it will wipe out the entire C: drive. (More than likely the virus did not copy itself to the restore location as it is protected). However if you did a system restore (to a previous date), then the virus is still more than likely there.

Now you have to make sure you have a good protection installed. Make sure you have layered protection. Have Antivirus software, malware software, and firewall software.

If you want to make sure your computer is clean, install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and update it then run as scan.

Thank you very much!

I did restore to the factory settings so I am good. Glad I had my important data backed up! I am trying new anti-virus and firewall products on the PC since mine let me down. I will continue to use Malywarebytes as well.

Those were some nasty viruses!
