ViewpointKiller Beta Testers Wanted

Recommended Posts

Marcin has given me permission to post here and ask for beta testers.

As some of you might know, I am the sole developer of ViewpointKiller. Recently, I released version 1.30, which was a complete rewrite from the ground up. I have been made aware of a few problems with 1.30, and I believe this stems from not having many beta testers and from the fact that I do not have a copy of Vista to test ViewpointKiller on.

This is where you come in. I am going to bring ViewpointKiller out of beta, and I would like to squash as many bugs as possible before sending this to "final" status. I would like you to beta test the software for me, in the same way that you tested MBAM and RogueRemover - that is, run the software, post logs, and report on anything odd you might see. General comments and criticism are welcome as well.

For your convenience, I have posted the ViewpointKiller description here:

ViewpointKiller attempts to fully remove Viewpoint Media Player, Viewpoint Manager, and Viewpoint Toolbar. It will not do this if you just run the program, rather, you select which variant of Viewpoint to remove in the menu. You can remove all three or any of the three you wish. The program generates a log file for you to post on a spyware fighting forum, if you feel the need to do so.

I would ask you to download the software and play around with it, regardless of if you have Viewpoint or not. Please note that Viewpoint is not especially harmful, but can be difficult to remove sometimes. ViewpointKiller simply tries to make this process easier.

Thank you very much. :)

Did you run it as administrator?

Paul, you will have huge problems with Vista unless you either adhere by Vista rules or request administrator privileges using a resource file.

See, this is what happens when I don't have a copy of Vista to develop with. I offered a certain company the rights to the software for a reasonable price, but he didn't take me up on my offer. :)

Ah no I didn't. Just ran it and it ran and produced the log find, however it couldn't delete anything and it had the error code 124 in the log on those.

Stupid error code.

Tigger93, would you mind pasting the log file or attaching it please?

Thanks Tigger93.

I believe I've patched ViewpointKiller to ask for UAC elevation now with this script:

<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" processorArchitecture="*" version="1.0.0.0" name="ViewpointKiller.exe"></assemblyIdentity> <description>ViewpointKiller</description> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" version="6.0.0.0" language="*" processorArchitecture="*" publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df"></assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency><trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v2"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="highestAvailable" uiAccess="FALSE"></requestedExecutionLevel> </requestedPrivileges> </security></trustInfo></assembly>

But I can't test it, obviously. I'll attach it here and those of you with Vista can run it (be sure and save everything in case of a crash) and report back here what occurs. Again, this is beta, so be sure and take all of the proper precautions. :)

Thanks!

Downloaded/installed some elements of the dross to my VM using the FF browser(will do also with IE at some point). VPK performed well and removed all :).

Side-note: I also run MBAM within my VM and MBAM PM picked up that Viewpoint was trying to launch other aspects of itself for download, which I ignored for the duration of the test :).

Thanks very much, Dakeyras. Looking good. :)

I'm still working on Vista compatibility - apparently Dev-C++, manifest files, and I don't get along very well. Marcin has been of no help. :)

Kidding - he's been most helpful in the development of ViewpointKiller.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry almost forgot to add... I ran this test on a Vista Ultimate edition pc.

Hi, I came across this page and wanted to give back something, so I decided to try my hand at beta testing.

I put viewpoint on my VM and kept a log of the removal.

I'm sorry if it a very long log and it is full of info you don't need I just wanted to do it right (hopefully I have)

Anyway here's the log. I had trouble with first installation but I think it may have been something I done. I did try to run as admin and a couple of other things though.

LOG:

After Viewpoint Install the HJT entry:

There were two more keys but they looked like duplicates of the ones just above. Thats all of it I think. Sorry I forgot to take all the details from one of the registry entries.

DSOS,

Thanks for the reply. I messed up the XML file and didn't realize it - that's why it wouldn't even run on your PC. It actually didn't run on mine either - Windows XP SP2. The problem is with my compiler - I couldn't quite figure out how to add the XML information to the program.

I've said this before, but I believe I've gotten it.

Please try this attachment again and see if it works this time. Thank you for betatesting!

Marcin has given me permission to post here and ask for beta testers.

As some of you might know, I am the sole developer of ViewpointKiller.

Same here. However, I'm working somewhat on a different utility. Mine is similar to hijackthis, but without all the fancy tools. Instead it allows the user to to produce a log file with complete contents of folders, sub folders and files. Right now it's still in the production phase, with many non working components. Hopefully when it's done it will help filter out those parasites. :)
