rootkit.agent - MBAM won't remove

Hi all,

I'm helping my roommate try to remove some malware, and ran across this rootkit that I just can't seem to shake.

Relevant information: Windows Vista, XP2

Malware/rootkit name according to MBAM: Rootkit.agent

Filename infected: c:\Windows\System32\drivers\rnzmcd.sys

Here's what I've done so far:

1. Updated MBAM and ran it, found several pieces of malware. One file was unable to be removed until it could be rebooted, so I did so.

2. Upon reboot, MBAM still found the offending file. I rebooted and tried one more time. Failure again - MBAM still showed it.

3. Rebooted in safemode, ran MBAM, the file did not appear. (From googling, it seems other people have also been unable to find it in safe mode)

4. Rebooted in regular mode, and scanned with MBAM, file still exists

5. Downloaded Sophos Anti-Rootkit. Ran a scan, and found that file along with some other temporary internet file. Told it to remove the file.

6. Upon reboot, the Sophos log showed that it could not be removed:

sophos anti rootkit error: failed to remove file (a device attached to the system is not functioning)

Any other tips? A few things I've found online have recommended using a program called combofix, but it looks rather scary.

just a suggestion, im not an expert, one will reply sooner or later, download avira antivir. set it to run as soon as its available on reboot, also under scan check expert mode, set bullet to all files, at the top of this forum it has a suggestion to install this program btw...anyway update antivir definitions, scan, remove whatever it finds, reboot, run malwarebytes while antivir is running in background and as malwarebytes finds threats , avira will detect where the infections are, that are attempting reinstall themselves, you may have to run updates and reboot several times, it will take time, you may decide to just reinstall windows as it is probably quicker... but again I am not an expert just trying to give you hope in the meantime.
