MBAM can't kill Vundo - suggestions?

e2c

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My netbook (running XP SP 3) was hit with Vundo several days ago. I've run MBAM repeatedly (after following your directions on how to reinstall and re-enable after having Vundo kill it), Spybot S&D (which caught many instances of it), AVG 8 (free), current version of Avira, and current version of Microsoft Security Essentials - all with current definitions, etc.

Together, these programs were able to mostly clear my system, but Vundo has burrowed deep into Google Chrome (current build and version), and pop-up ads and redirects persist. HijackThis logs don't show any instances of Vundo at this point.

I've also run RootRepeal per directions given in other threads.

My current logs:

I hope this is the end of this infection, but haven't yet tried opening Google Chrome to see if it keeps redirecting and displaying popup ads... here goes.

thanks in advance for your help.

Re. the above: Google Chrome is *still* showing popups and is redirecting to phony ad sites.

There's been a pattern to this. Normally, the 1st and 2nd links I click on (safe ones, posted in my own blog as well as on trustworthy sites like L.L. Bean) will open OK. But the 3d click on a "safe" link seems to wake Vundo (or whatever it is this computer's suffering from...).

I've just updated to the latest MBAM database and am doing another full scan.

again, thanks in advance. I really hope this problem can be fixed!

Hi there - yes, I do!

Browser redirects and so forth are still happening with Google Chrome... it seems as if nothing I've tried will kill (or even detect) the Vundo dlls that are hiding in my instalation of Chrome. I'm not sure what to do...

Download GMER Antirootkit Here, click on Download EXE and save to your Desktop

  • Disconnect from the internet and disable all active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver
  • Double-click Gmer.exe to run the program.
  • When the program opens, click the "Rootkit" Tab
  • On the right-side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave "Show All" unchecked
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned
  • Click the Scan button
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor
  • Paste the clipboard contents into a text file by clicking Edit | Paste or Ctl V
  • Save the gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close Gmer
  • Open a command prompt (Start | run |type cmd and hit Enter)
    • Type or paste the following to unload the gmer driver:
    • net stop gmer
    • Hit Enter
    • Exit the command prompt.

    [*]Re-enable all active protection.

okay let try something else then. Looks like something else other than vundo is on your pc.

Download Combofix from this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
