I seem to have picked up an adware virus caled Antivirus Live, the usual fake errors, popups, messages saying to buy it, and random porn site activation, but it is also stopping me from activating mbam, hijackthis, or outlook exp, saying they are infected. How do I get around this?

Hi,

but it is also stopping me from activating mbam, hijackthis, or outlook exp, saying they are infected. How do I get around this?
It looks like one of these infections that uses a "whitelist" of allowed files to run and blocks all the rest (saying they are infected).

An easy workaround is, rename the files you want to run, for example; rename mbam.exe to explorer.exe or winlogon.exe or svchost.exe.

Then you should be able to run Malwarebytes after it's renamed.

Let me know if that helped and post the Malwarebytes log in your next reply.

I was able to get into mbam and did both a quickscan and fullscan, got rid of everything it flagged, restarted both times, and it still won't go away. And I can't even post the log, because as soon as it tries to open Notepad, it says that infected too.

None of the alternate names worked for Hijackthis.

I've just realise that I have a few seconds when the computer reboots before the virus becomes active, and in that window, I can open the blocked programs. Here is the Hijackthis log:

Hi,

Your logs are confusing. Also, you didn't update Malwarebytes before..

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log (after the mbam scan and reboot), then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

BTW, renaming files to firefox.exe or iexplore.exe should work as well to make it to work, because firefox.exe and iexplore.exe are also on the whitelist.

However, I have a bad feeling here and it looks like you are dealing with Virut here as well. I really hope this isn't the case as this would mean a "Game over" situation unfortunately.
