I received notice from Facebook about a recent data breach.  FB offered a way to find out if and how I was affected, and it turned out to be a Malwarebytes freebie.  Thanks.  If a user uses the freebie and finds identity info in the open, the "fix this now" button leads to only a promo for a paid subscription.  Fine, they have to make $$$, I get it.  But I AM a paid subscriber, just the standard version, and even when I log in, MWBytes says I must upgrade to get their identity theft service.  Well, now it is starting to seem a little opportunistic.  I've been a subscriber for years, and believe I should have been protected before the data breach, or if not, be given a free upgrade to solve a novel problem.  Isn't that what the MWBytes ads all stress, that it will keep us up-to-date at all times?  Yes, it's not a malware issue, it's a data breach, I also get that.  But what we are paying for is peace of mind, not vertical purchasing opportunities made known only when a data breach is in the news.

In short, hey Malwarebytes staff: use the stories ripped from today's headlines to grow your user base, that's good marketing.  But don't milk your faithful for more money when something new appears on the horizon.  Be the comprehensive service we thought we had.

Malwaebytes that you and I have been using for years would not have prevented this breach or any others.

They generally do not originate from your computer.

That is correct.

Malwarebytes Identity theft protection is only about a year old and of course, promotion will happen.

There are other no obligation free ways to see if your email has been part of a breach like https://haveibeenpwned.com/
