Malwarebytes for Mac 5.6.0 broke a setting with the Menu bar

I had the icon in Menu Bar off and Malwarebytes for Mac 5.6.0 bug breaks that as it is stuck in Menu Bar

Quite ironic how Malwarebytes becomes a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) itself by forcing this unwanted menu bar item on users with no option to remove it.

I've uninstalled Malwarebytes completely. I won't let third-parties dictate what I have in my menu bar.

The menubar icon in v5.6.0 adds new functionality that wouldn't otherwise be accessible. Please see staff response at

Adds that only if you are not using the free version so this update adds a bug ignoring user setting, not sure any of the items in the menu bar are useable with the free version.   macOS will not hide it that might be on machines with a notch.

None of the functionality of the menu bar is relevant to free users. Even when I had a paid subscription, I wouldn't use the VPN - I have a dedicated VPN for that. I wouldn't need constant access to active protection either, and even if I did, it wouldn't be worth using an entire icon on my menu bar for. Having no option to disable the menu bar icon makes absolutely no sense, and I've just uninstalled Malwarebytes based solely on this, after having it for over 10 years.

Whomever thought this was a smart idea, really should think again. On my MacBooks, the notch already makes the space available for icons in the menubar quite constrained - I don't need, nor want a useless icon there, or even an icon that I don't control. I can't remove it, I can't hide it - and I sure as heck don't want it. I've just renewed my subscription, but I think I will be asking for that to be refunded - as I will be removing this unwanted PuP from my systems.
