windows defender?? Persistent

Hello

Pretty sure I was infected by Windows Defender (maybe something else though). Ran malware bytes but could not update. I tried the troubleshooting ideas (firewall, etc) but still can not update, which I feel is because of the infection. Originally I was bombarded with pop-ups of "something.exe infected" I ran rkill function from bleepingcomputer and it shut down most of those, however, similar pop-ups are still happening saying McAfee security options have not been installed correctly etc.

Hi,

This is the cause why you can't update:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

So, Open Internet Explorer > In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".

In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

Then try to update Malwarebytes, run a scan, let it remove what it found, reboot once again and post the log in your next reply.

Also, before you do this....I see you are running Teatimer.

I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.

When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.

Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.

This will only take a few seconds.

And I see you have AdwareAlert installed. Please uninstall it since this one is not really recommended.

Thank you.

I tried your first step (changing to auto detect settings on firefox and ie) and I was able get the malwareupdates. However, I ran it with the updates and it did not find anything - but I am still receiving two fake McAffee security center pop ups routinely. I removed Adaware and attempted to do the TeaTimer removal but I do not have spybot search and destroy which the removal instructions are worded for.
