Norton silently becoming Avast!?

pondus

Nothing silent about it, Norton, Avast/AVG, CCleaner, and many others are now all part of Gen Digital  - and they share product development, programming code, CDNs, and more.

https://www.gendigital.com/us/en/family-of-brands/

They even share software a licencing system now, If you purchase a software from one of the main brands then your Licence key is now an 'Account Key' and the same key can be used if you later purchase a product from one of the others.
The newly purchased product is added to your account and you can then activate it with the existing 20-digit key that you already have.

@nukecad, isn't the CCleaner the one that you were talking about a couple months ago? Is this the "final" resolution?

Probably, I'm a moderator on the CCleaner forum.

I can't remember what we were talking about though, possibly the stupid 'paywall trial' they were doing?
They never really explained, or even discussed, that but it just stopped happening after a month or two of user complaints.

The latest news there is that the CCleaner forum is changing hosting platforms, supposedly later this week.
They are changing from Invision Community Suite, the same as here, to Discourse.

No reason given for that change either, there is nothing wrong with Invision Community so we're guessing it's another Gen driven change.
Maybe they are moving all their software company user forums to Discourse? Maybe to get a bulk discount? Or maybe they bought Discourse or a stake in it?

We mods (or the users) don't know how the look of the forum, the 'skin', will change until it's up and of course we will have a new set of user and moderation tools and options to get to grips with.
No real problem and it's always good to learn something new to add to your CV (Resume), not that I'm looking for a job.

Well they started the migration, they have put CCleaner forum in read only mode and say it will be down for a week.

EDIT- And the spammers still managed to get some up despite not being able to post, luckilly I could also still remove it and ban them.
I informed admin of that loophole and it has now been closed off too.

The New version from Norton was released two day´s ago.

Version 24.X from Norton = Avast.

Many people in the norton forum don´t get it ... it does not only look different, it is different. It is Avast.

The same Programm version/build, the same Virus definitions version, same Number of definitions.

Right now, I use Malwarebytes in the Free Version - just in case.

I had to allow Malwarebytes in Norton to run a scan.

I am not sure, what will happen, if I use the new Norton and Malwarebytes Premium, just read, they don´t get along very well, because of the Web Protection Avast uses.

Now Web Protection is deeply integrated into Norton.

It´s the same with AVG... different name, different look, but inside = Avast.

I have been testing this version for abit and it's very buggy. This is technically still a beta also Norton power eraser is no longer in the product...... I have 4 years of norton bought it due to a deal on serialcart for dirt cheap.

Well, I like the new design... and it´s running ok.

But, it slowes down my youtube connection ... this, I don´t like.

On "heise online" - a german web page about it stuff... Gen Digital has confirmed, that norton is using the avast scan engine.

Naturally.

I guess this keeps you on your toes. There might be some gnashing of teeth. If, so, I hope it's short and hindsight shows the change was a good one.

Well, CCleaner didn't manage to get thier forum migration done in a week and they now have 25th September as the new re-opening date.

In the meantime CCleaner version 6.28.11297 has been released today, https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history

If you have CCleaner's automatic updates turned on you should get it that way, if not then you can 'Check for updates' in CCleaner or download it from the builds page: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
