so badly infected - maybe too far gone?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I have a computer here that was given to me to fix that "just stopped working". Well, it appears that it is so badly infected, that by the time Windows XP Home loads, the mouse and keyboard won't work - both in regular bootup and safe modes. I put a Ubuntu CD in and ran that OS to have a look at the drive - it is full - and I mean FULL - of viruses and malware. So I downloaded the Kaspersky Rescue Disk and am trying to clean out enough of the bad stuff to get the thing to function in safe mode. (Unknown if I will be successful though.) So I was wondering, is there a way to run MBAM from the boot up to the C prompt, or even a way to run it in Linux at all? I am hoping to get the computer working enough to install Belarc Advisor, to grab the keycodes for the software on it, so if I have to do a reformat/reinstall, I will be able to reinstall MSOffice, etc. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes.

I Apologize for the late response.

If you still require assistance, we would like to see the latest state of your system. So, please take a read in this thread on instructions on running the tools and posting the logs for instructions: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9573

In your reply, I would also like to know any symptoms you may still have and how your computer is running at the moment.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don

Hi.

What do you exactly mean by the "C Prompt"? Depends on the Linux it is, I believe Ubuntu would work.

I could not get into XP either regular boot, lastknow good configuration, no safe mode. However, I was able at one point to boot to C:> prompt. Just wondering if MBAM would install and run from there and how to do it. Also - are there any special instructions to run inside Ubuntu?

I would ask that in the: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=41 forum.

I'm not exaclty sure what you still mean by:

How did you get to the C:> prompt? Where did you get to the C:> prompt?

When the computer first boots, you tap F8 for the boot options (safe mode, with networking, last known good configuration, etc). There is an option for C:> prompt, and that worked at one point - it was the only one that worked, because of all the infections in the Windows operating system. I thought perhaps I could load and run MBAM from there? Would like to know for future. Also, if MBAM can be run from Ubuntu, would like to know the procedure for that as well, for future.

Thanks!

Hello.

Yes, I understand that when you go to the Windows Advanced Options Menu, there are several boot modes you can boot into. However, there is no option for C:> prompt in XP that I know of. Are you referring to the Recovery Console?

I would ask regrading the Linux in the General Malwarebytes forum as I posted above as some of the people there who know more about Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and a link if possible to provide you with instructions.
