Cleaning

Go to solution Solved by JSntgRvr,

Hello everybody,

Last week, the search results did not appear, the first result was immediately displayed instead. zhpCleaner solved that, although it could not clean everything it found.

Today a light flash on the screen while it was locked remained me to verify everything is in order, and it seems not really.

As I remember, to verify that you use FRST?

Hello,

Oh, right, this time I forgot adwCleaner.

I installed an extension to prevent Firefox from displaying Microsoft's "how to get help about Windows ?"

This was often displayed while pressing F1 instead of Escape, that is just next to it. It is useless to spend connection fees for a page that brings nothing.

To avoid that I installed the BlockSite extension. There are two extensions with that name, one is active.

Do you have a better idea? adwCleaner points this extension as a PUP.

I took care of downloading adwCleaner from where you said. It seems it speaks French, I added "_English" to its name as you advised me for FRST.

For Malwarebytes, I clicked on a link in English, but it installed it in French. Going to see whether I have to translate some points. The last time I installed MBAM, I uninstalled it after the analysis, for there were too many false positive, including on programs I wrote, and I had no tips about how to write them differently to avoid false positive.

MBAM's analysis has just finished. The recycle bin contains many suspected machine learning attacks, I presume emptying the recycle bin can be the solution.

I spent much time on a diaporama program, the last programming session was yesterday night. I ignore while Quick Launch contains a link to it, I did not even know that Quick Launch still existed. Oh, I presume these are the applications that are pinned to the taskbar?

MachineLearning/Anomalous.93%, C:\PROJECTS VISUAL STUDIO\WINFORM\LISTIRFANVIEW\LISTIRFANVIEW\BIN\DEBUG\LISTIRFANVIEW.EXE, Aucune action de l'utilisateur, 0, 392687, 1.0.86078, , shuriken, , E069F20C26C019C7A3B395468A7057CC, 6B1F1E54A68EC2BCE2005F39323A080EBDE58FFF28DE1939C7BECC337310699B

MachineLearning/Anomalous.93%, C:\USERS\USER\APPDATA\ROAMING\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\QUICK LAUNCH\User Pinned\TaskBar\ListIrfanView.lnk, Aucune action de l'utilisateur, 0, 392687, 1.0.86078, , shuriken, , FD3522E2BCC01B9C9BDB6D89CFA2CD74, C3EA419C42B69F2EFD0A5C2BA6985CAB0C2A86063ABA80DB7738F6759286BE8F

The quick start is not checked, my machine starts in less than a minute.

Salutations

Welcome smile.png

I'll be helping you with your computer.

Please read this post completely before beginning. If there's anything that you do not understand, please don't hesitate to ask before proceeding.

Please take note of the guidelines for this fix:

  • Please note that I am a volunteer. I do have a family, a career, and other endeavors that may prevent immediate responses that meet your schedule. Do note that the differences in time zones could present a problem as well. Your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.
  • First of all, the procedures we are about to perform are specific to your problem and should only be used on this specific computer.
  • Do not make any changes to your computer that include installing/uninstalling programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, nor running scanners or tools of any kind unless specifically requested by me.
  • Please read ALL instructions carefully and perform the steps fully and in the order they are written.
  • If things appear to be better, let me know. Just because the symptoms no longer exist as before, does not mean that you are clean.
  • Continue to read and follow my instructions until I tell you that your machine is clean.
  • If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask before performing the task that I ask of you, and please wait for my reply before you proceed.
  • Scanning with programs and reading the logs do take a fair amount of time. Again, your patience will be necessary. smile.png

Let's begin...

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

FRST64 was saved as  C:\Users\User\Downloads\2024-06-20\FRST64_English.exe

  • Download the enclosed file  Fixlist.txt
  • Save it in the same location FRST64 is saved. (FRSTEnglish.exe)
  • Start FRST (FRST64) with Administrator privileges
  • This time around Press the Fix button and wait
  • When finished, a log file (Fixlog.txt) will pop up and saved in the same location the tool was ran from.

Please attach this file in your next reply.

Dr.Web CureIt!

Please download the Dr.Web CureIt! anti-virus utility
https://free.drweb.com/

You will need to send them an email to obtain a link to download the scanner, please do so

  • The downloaded file will normally have a unique name such as:  q7a9tr4p.exe
  • Close all open applications and locate the downloaded file and double-click to run it
  • The program will take a moment to launch and bring up the License and Update screen
  • Place a check mark to agree to the terms and then click on the Continue button
  • Click the underlined link Select objects for scanning
  • On the top left click the Scanning objects that should automatically check all objects
  • Click the small wrench and make sure there is a check on Automatically apply actions to threats
  • Then click the large button on bottom right Start scanning
  • Once the scan has completed there will be a link named Open report click that and a log named cureit.log should open in Notepad
  • The log is saved in the folder named Doctor Web in the top of your user profile folders
  • Please attach that log on your next reply

Hello, OK thanks.

Sorry I had to temporise somewhat as I was short of connection fees, and waited for the expiration and renewal.

You want to delete the Firefox history, is it possible to save it somewhere? I presume I have to be specific to avoid saving something else that could be harmful.

Then as I understand I shall have to run DrWeb once, and it does not conflict with ESet Internet Security (oh they were repeating me during two days that my machine was at risk, but it could not, as it was not connected to Internet and I did not use new external supports).

During that time I see no symptoms, only zhpCleaner told me there were infections. I hope they do not include any spy or Eset IS would have told me, but some unsolicited treatments are probable, as changes in the selection of search engine for instance.

Yours faithfully

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello,

So, here is the situation:

  • I had search results not displaying
  • this problem did not appear any more after I launched zhpCleaner
  • but zhpCleaner still signalled problems, so I launched FRST and came here with the log
  • you told me to launch DrWeb, so I sent a mail to DrWeb in order to get registered there and get the software, and I am still waiting for the answer

I generally use the browser's password manager (with a distinct password for each site ; this is how I could inform a friend about where a leak happened, where we were both registered –he had no idea where it came from, as he used the same password everywhere, and the pirate only said the password ; we had confirmation from the site itself a few days later ; anyway my password was obsolete, and telling me about spying me through an obfuscated camera with two further locks was not very realistic).

I initially installed a separate password manager, that recommends a very long general password, and ... it was so long that I was unable to remember it. That did not seem very glorious.
