Help! "autorun.inf" and "filesystem" keeps writing to thumbdrive

Hi, need some help here. Thanks.

2 days ago, my laptop (windows xp) was infected with malware. Before that, I have been using AVAST! and it was able to detect a "WIN32 RIMECUD-C". Although after "deleting" the worm, it keeps appearing. It also writes "autorun.inf" and "filesystem"to any flash drives plugged in. Since then I have tried booting into safe mode, installed Norton Antivirus 2010, updated it, and it was able to clean. But to no avail, the worm is still there, because it still appears after bootup and gets blocked by Norton Antivirus. And it writes to inserted flash drives.

Hi,

Sorry to hijack the thread, I am facing the same problem, and the virus is spreading like crazy on our network as people share USB's.

I did what you said below and this is what the output shows. Can you please giude me what to do next? Seems like this virus is no joke, infected PC's take the whole network down by sending an unbelievable amount of information through the NIC card. Once the machine is unplugged, our network is back up again.

See the output below, thanks,

Ben

p.s. I also noticed that by ending the "explorer" task and restarting it, I am able to delete all contects from the USB drive. However upon reinserting, all comes back. Also when I restart the explorer task, windll.exe shows up in the list of tasks

Hi,

This one is already detected by Malwarebytes though, but I see now that your database is way outdated.

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi there,

Thanks that was it, my database was not updated, all clean now. The problem was that we lost internet as soon as one of the infected PC's were connected, so there was no chance on doing the update. I did the update from home, tool the rules file and replicated it to all PCs, that did the job.

Thanks again,

Ben

Good to hear and Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
