Malwarebytes will not run, virusscanner will not update, windows will not update

My daughter's laptop ( Toshiba A100, Vista SP2) has a nasty bit of malware - to get Malwarebytes & File assassin on it I had to load them off of an SD card - same with HJT as any attempt to download them off the internet was deflected or blocked.

The virus scanner ( BitDefender) I loaded today ( previously had trend micro ) which loaded but will not update. The Scan did give a couple of temp files that were removed with FileAssassin ( running of the SD card) but I can't do that trick with Malwarebytes.

Below is the HJT log. Could someone please suggest a solution or is it time to reformat the HD?

thanks for any / all help.

Hello Thad and welcome to the forums here at MalwareBytes.

Yes, she definitely picked up some pretty nasty stuff. We can probably clean this but I need to give you a "heads up" on the risks this infection brings.

Identity Theft

It looks like you have been infected by one or more Backdoor Trojans.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here.

I suggest you do the following immediately:

  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities. I must remind you that i cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely clean afterwards since we have no way of knowing what has been done to it.

To help you make your decision, here are a few related articles that i suggest you read:

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

Thank you for your reply - that was a detail I had not considered. I don't think that she uses it for online banking & such , but...

I forgot to mention that when I did install & run Bitdefender there was ~ 45 or so suspect files that were removed & on the initial restart a backdoor trojan ( forgotten which one) was also removed. One file had to be removed with fileassassin - very long 'tmp' file name as well but the problem of no updates remains. Also cannot do a system restore as all of the files are reported as corrupted and even the disk tools will not run.

I've told her that ity may come to a HD reformat with this thing but she wants to try to clean it up first.

What do you suggest?

I've told her that ity may come to a HD reformat with this thing but she wants to try to clean it up first.

What do you suggest?

We can go for the cleaning. She should still change all her passwords to any sites she visits, email, ect...from a clean PC.

The logs that we ask for can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Malware and the removal process can pose a risk of data loss. I recommend you make a backup of any data that you have created, such as documents, pictures, music, ect... before we begin the fix if possible.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1

Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Please also post an updated HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hi,

Looking better. I would suggest you uninstall the Ask Toolbar. While not really "malicious" I would consider it unwanted and certainly don't run it on my PC's. More info. at the link below.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/?p=858

Can you run MalwareBytes now? Please try if you haven't already, making sure to update it first. Then post the log back here and let me know how it's running.

Thanks - I'll see what happens & keep you posted. I agree with you on that ASK toolbar - it's definitely an irritant.

BTW - thank you for the time & effort you've put into this
