My version of MWB Premium has just been updated to version 5 this morning. I don't use the VPN service so like many others here would like to see an option to remove it from the dashboard.

However, what is more disconcerting is that MWB is attempting to communicate with a server in Sweden (IP address 45.83.223.233) host ipv4.am.i.mullvad.net every 1/2 second. This is being blocked by the web filter on my router (Arista Untangle) under the Category "Proxy Avoidance and Anonymizers" .

Can someone explain what is going on and why and how to turn off this communication?

Thanks

Mike

@MJLYou might have better luck contacting support. How to contact support

@Porthos. I was going to contact support on my original query but the constant attempts to establish a TCP connection with that server in Sweden stopped after a few days of my second posting. It now only happens for about 3 seconds after MWB has been restarted. I still have it blocked so no connection is made but my web filter logs are no longer being filled with blocked attempts.

Still do not appreciate why this is happening.

It is most likely looking for a VPN subscription. I personally would not block it. If it can easily be checked, it might not be checked as often.

Hi MJL:

I can't give you a definitive answer but the Mullvad VPN web page at https://mullvad.net/en/help/partnerships-and-resellers notes that "Malwarebytes has partnered with Mullvad in order to utilize our global network of VPN servers for its own VPN application, Malwarebytes Privacy, since October 2019". Mullvad is based in Sweden.

Someone from Malwarbytes will have to explain why the new Malwarebytes v5.x still attempts to connect to the Mullvad servers if the user dos not have Malwarebytes Privacy VPN installed on their system.  That's something that could be checked on the local computer before the connection is even attempted.
