Happened out of nowhere upon a reboot. I did the uninstall/run the cleaner/reinstall but with and without Kaspersky 2010 running to no avail. I start protection and it comes back with error code 2 after a few minutes. It's on database version 3189. Am I just waiting on the next database upgrade since that's what fixed it last time?

The same error occurred for me.

I am sure it relates to database 3189. I booted the computer and it loaded fine. Updated as per usual. Rebooted and the same error was shown.

Hope this will be fixed soon.

I really think 3189 was a defective update since someone else had the same problem. Waiting on 3190.

I am having the exact same problem. I went to update this morning. I am on 3189. I tried reinstalling and rebooting and everything. I cannot fix the problem no matter what I do. Please help. We have NO ACTIVE PROTECTION. Mbam is not running in my task manager at all.

Same thing happened to me, did the whole uninstall/cleanup/reinstall procedure to the letter and still had the same issue. When I go to restart the service in services via the Microsoft Management Console, i get this error

---------------------------

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

---------------------------

[OpenEvent] Failed to perform desired action. Error Code: 2

---------------------------

---------------------------

When I look at the protection log, this is what it reads:

17:31:26 ERROR zlib::decompress failed with error code 5

17:31:26 MESSAGE Protection stopped

17:34:49 ERROR zlib::decompress failed with error code 5

17:34:49 MESSAGE Protection stopped

Yes I just updated and the problem is solved. Thanks for fixing it, but I about freaked out in the meanwhile because I had issues with another security program I got rid of that kept corrupting my malwarebytes program. I keep thinking - this can't be happening again. I am glad it is fixed and we have active protection once more - whew!

Lol, I know what you mean, before my laptop was fixed by clean installing XP on it with MB and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition, put on for protection, my computer kept freezing up on me and even crashed on me on more than one occasion, so much so that one time it had to be wiped and new os installed. Now, no errors/viruses/malware/spyware/what-have-you-ware, disturb it at all. Whoo!

Following a complete Vista reinstallation last night and MBAM this afternoon I've been getting this same error; the systray icon also disappears soon after. No crashes occur though. MBAM appears to start with Windows as I've enabled that, and then the error occurs. I've uninstalled MBAM for the moment as I've had one too many errors/odd behaviours with it recently.

EDIT: I failed to read the entire thread here; mea culpa an' all that. I'll reinstall MBAM later and we'll see what happens. :)

Yes I too had the same problem. I had wanted to get rid of McAfee Total Protection and move to Webroot Security Essentials. After installing Essentials, my computer became very unstable. It totally crashed, not just seized. It forced it into protected boot where I was informed that mbam was unstable and to uninstall whatever I just installed. It would be great if malwarebytes had a list of security software it does not have conflicting issues with. I would love to drop mcafee but do not want to go through these issues again. Oddly enough malwarebytes does not seem to conflict with spy sweeper from webroot which I had my key downgraded back to after the incident. I am glad however that my issue did not force a complete reinstall of my xp! That is the pits. Glad yours is running great now however. My processor is old too - a celeron m, so not all security software runs well on it anyway.

Ouch, that must've been harsh, having to reinstall both vista AND MBAM, almost all in one go. Glad to see everything's working again! I know from experience how much of a pain Vista can be, what with the UAC and all :) .

That is an old processor, my laptop's an Acer Aspire, back from when the BBB (Better Business Bureau) gave them a D+ C- for a grade. With an Intel Centrino Duo processor and only 1 GB ram.

do you think having old equipment can possibly be a disadvantage for this?

can possibly cause problems like this?

I'll try to answer your, very thought provoking questions, as best as I possibly can.

#1 & #2. Yes/no. I do think that having old equipment can be a big disadvantage, mainly because, well let's face it, it's old, and there's a HUGE possibility, that the hardware on your machine, could/can be incompatible with the newer technology that's available today. For example, say you went out and bought a the newest, best, top-of-the-line, fully loaded out the doors, computer, ok? As soon as you open that box, guess what? It's already obsolete. Sure you may have the best computer on the block, but that doesn't mean that it's the most elite, because, 2-3 years down the road, a new model, a better model, hits the shelves, because as soon as the techs that made your computer finished it, they were already looking at ways to improve upon it, make it better then its predecessor. It's a fact, everybody knows it, or at least I'd like to think that everybody does.

Take a look at my laptop, it's 3 years old, it's already crashed on me at least 3 times, to the point where I've had to bring it in to be repaired/restored because I could not do so myself. Not fun. As to the NO half of my response, if you could please clarify what it is that you mean when you said "this" in your question's "do you think having old equipment can possibly be a disadvantage for this?" "can possibly cause problems like this?" ? I'd greatly appreciate it if you would please, thanks. However, I do believe that with the proper maintenance, upkeep, repairs, and the like, even and old computer (depending upon how old it is of course) can still perform just as well, if not slightly better than (albeit marginally so at that) today's models. I do hope that I got the point's I was trying to make across as best as I could, if not then I apologize.
