Hi everybody. This just started a couple days ago for me, although a forum search turned a similar post from like six years ago that didn't have much talk in it.

In short, Activision/Blizzard's battle.net installer and/or update agent do not function when malwarebyte's real-time protection (specifically the Malware Protection) is active.

I've added a ton of related files, folders, and websites (named and by IP address) to the allow list, to no success. I'm currently going through Wireshark logs looking for more to add, but so far the only surefire way to fix the problem is to disable Real-Time Malware Protection. I know that Blizzard relies on cloudfront and akamai for a lot of their web services. Is it possible something got caught by accident?

Interesting. I run Battlenet and I'm not having an issue. Let us get some logs @Minus

To begin, please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained are safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to the Public desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thank you

The logs don't show any obvious infections but there are quite a few issues, errors in the Event Logs

You have some very very old software running on the system as well that probably shouldn't be running.

If you like we can try to do some generic clean up and see if that helps improve things.

I see that this got moved to the malware removal help section. Just for the record, I don't believe that any malware on my machine is causing this; it seems to be malwarebytes itself preventing some function/communication of a legitimate program.

These are older than the computer itself. If this is valid for your hardware then you should try to locate an updated driver newer than 2014

Startup: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Killer Network Manager.lnk [2014-11-21]
ShortcutTarget: Killer Network Manager.lnk -> C:\Windows\Installer\{EEFEFA96-8A1A-4B0F-AF69-FFDE5CD9692D}\NetworkManager.exe_130C27D738F34C89BDDF21BCFD74B56D.exe (Qualcomm Atheros, Inc. -> Flexera Software LLC)

Please run the following fix

NOTE: Please read all of the information below before running this fix.

  • NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine.
  • Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Once the fix has been completed, please attach the file FIXLOG.TXT to your next reply

Farbar program:   FRSTEnglish.exe

Save the attached file:  FIXLIST.TXT to this folder C:\Users\gamezone2\Downloads\

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRSTEnglish.exe, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Please make sure you disable any real-time antivirus or security software before running this script. Once completed, make sure you re-enable it.

Run the Farbar program with Admin rights and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The fix may possibly take up to 60 minutes to complete

If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log named Fixlog.txt in the same folder you ran the Farbar program from. Please attach that log on your next reply.

  1. NOTE:  This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files. It will also run a disk check on the restart to ensure disk integrity.
  2. NOTE: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications may be automatically closed.
Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies may possibly be removed in some cases, but not all cases.
  3. NOTE: As part of this fix, it will also reset the network to default settings including the firewall. If you have custom firewall rules you need to save please export or save them first before running this fix.

The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome, and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Discord cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

Thanks

We're not done. Still working on cleaning up.

The FIX ran well and also found and fixed some other Windows issues

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

It's not necessarily because of Malwarebytes, it could be but not sure yet at this time.

It might be but I'm not having the issue and I don't have any outdated software on my system.

I've updated or removed everything in the list except WinRAR and my AMD driver (my version seems to be the latest recommended that supports my hardware). A new run of securitycheck says some things are out of date despite having just updated them(Discord and Skype), but this is as good as we're getting.

The Battle.net Update Agent's behavior is still weird.

Update for anyone from the Blizzard forums who found my post: On a hunch, I just tried running the update agent as administrator (changed compatability on like a half-dozen different locations of Agent.exe and AgentHelper.exe in ProgramData to run as Administrator). Now it all seems to work?

It's also possible that one or more software updates were actually the fix, but I'm not sure why it would only start working after I ran the agent manually.

Best guess: Try the latest Windows 10 cumulative update preview first.
