High cpu usage caused by cmd.exe - stops when opening Tskmgr or Resmon

Hi,

First of all thank you to whomever helps me with this.

I found this topic:

topic/306592-high-memorycpu-usage-cmdexe/

My problem is pretty much identical.

I noticed my fans ramping up when I wasn't doing anything in particular, and when checking Tskmgr it showed high usage of CPU and than immediately going down, along with the fans going back to low speed.

As soon as I close Tskmgr it takes about 10-15 seconds for it to ramp up again. When checking NZXT Cam I could not see any program that was using the cpu, but I did see the spike in cpu temp (and thus the fans).

Last 2 weeks I have been using Taskmgr in the background, just to keep this from happening. But today I took some more time to try and find out what it was.
Using the Task Manager DeLuxe softwar I found on google, I was able to view the process while it was happening, and the culprit seems to be cmd.exe
Unfortunately that's where my knowledge on how to proceed stopped, and when using google "cmd.exe using cpu" I found the above mentioned topic.

On the first reply on that topic you asked for a file, which I went ahead and got already (gather log).
I did 2, just in case. 1 with taskmgr open, 1 with it closed (and cmd using cpu).

I hope you can help me find the issue and get rid of it.

Regards,

Andrew

  • Solution

Welcome smile.png

I'll be helping you with your computer.

Please read this post completely before beginning. If there's anything that you do not understand, please don't hesitate to ask before proceeding.

Please take note of the guidelines for this fix:

  • Please note that I am a volunteer. I do have a family, a career, and other endeavors that may prevent immediate responses that meet your schedule. Do note that the differences in time zones could present a problem as well. Your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.
  • First of all, the procedures we are about to perform are specific to your problem and should only be used on this specific computer.
  • Do not make any changes to your computer that include installing/uninstalling programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, nor running scanners or tools of any kind unless specifically requested by me.
  • Please read ALL instructions carefully and perform the steps fully and in the order they are written.
  • If things appear to be better, let me know. Just because the symptoms no longer exist as before, does not mean that you are clean.
  • Continue to read and follow my instructions until I tell you that your machine is clean.
  • If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask before performing the task that I ask of you, and please wait for my reply before you proceed.
  • Scanning with programs and reading the logs do take a fair amount of time. Again, your patience will be necessary. smile.png

Let's begin...

This Fix will empty the following folders:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome, and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Discord cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

The tool saved FRST64.exe in your downloads folder as FRSTEnglish.exe

  • Download the enclosed file  Fixlist.txt
  • Save it in the same location FRST64.exe is saved (FRSTEnglish.exe)
  • Start FRST (FRST64) with Administrator privileges (FRSTEnglish.exe)
  • This time around Press the Fix button and wait
  • When finished, a log file (Fixlog.txt) will pop up and saved in the same location the tool was ran from.

Please attach this file in your next reply.

Malwarebytes for Windows

  • If you already have Malwarebytes installed then open Malwarebytes and click on the small gear icon, then click on the "Check for updates" button on the General tab.
  • After any updates, click the middle Scan button from the main page. It will automatically run a Threat Scan.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet, please download it from here or alternative link and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed, make sure you have it quarantine any detections it finds.
  • If no detections were found click on the Save results drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If there were detections then once the quarantine has completed click on the View report button, Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If the computer restarted to quarantine you can access the logs from the Detection History, then the History tab. Highlight the most recent scan and double-click to open it. Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let us know in your next reply that the scanner would not run.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

First things first: enclosed the 2 requested files.

Fixlog.txtScan report.txt

Second: I'm kinda autistic, so removing history and cookies is freaking me out a little bit. But I did make a firefox backup so I could restore it later. Once my pc rebooted I did get a bunch of firewall requests (dropbox, camera system etc), which is also fine. But my logitech software is not functioning anymore. It will not find my mouse (Logi Options +), meaning my shortcuts on the mouse do not function.

I don't want to reinstall those programs yet, but I did want to let you know what's going on.

So far, Taskmgr is not running and cpu is not being used much. So that problem, at the least, is fixed as far as I can tell.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

The Miner was successfully removed.

We usually remove temporary files and folders as malware may hide on those.

What is the current condition of the computer?

I restored my Firefox backup because it was getting really uncomfortable, hehe. So I got my history etc. back.

I also removed all Logitech software, and installed options again, and it immediately found my mouse. So that did the trick.

The CPU is not ramping up anymore, and the fans are obviously back to normal as well.

Therefore, the issue is resolved.

Thank you very much for the quick support.

  • When the tool has finished, it will create and open a log report and delete itself.
