IP Protection Question...

Recommended Posts

I've searched pretty thoroughly and not found an answer so, thought I'd give it a shot here. Can anyone think of what might cause the IP Protection feature on an XP machine to just give an audible "click" when blocking rather than, the normal balloon popup notification in the system tray?

After several days of digging around trying to find why I could not access a particular site (which is not BTW, a security risk) I only discovered the cause when I tried accessing from my Vista machine and got the normal, balloon notification. Although some feel the notification can be a nuisance I very much prefer it to know what is going on rather than, just a click and the page fails to load.

Hi Dan334,

It sounds like maybe you have tool tips turned off.

See if this gets your balloons back

  1. Double-click "My Computer" if visible on your desktop, or open up virtually any other folder window in Explorer.
  2. Choose "Tools" - "Folder Options".
  3. When the "Folder Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "View" tab.
  4. Underneath "Advanced settings", Scroll down to "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items" and check or uncheck the option as desired.
  5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box, and then close the folder window.

As for the site you are trying to access, see here for more information on controlling IP blocking. If you like, you can temporarily disable IP blocking by right-clicking the MBAM tray icon and removing the check mark for IP Protection. You can either turn it back on yourself or wait until you reboot, at which time it will automatically resume. The link above will also tell you how to turn off IP blocking completely, if you so choose.

If you think the site you are trying to access is legitimate, you can submit it to the False Positives forum and the experts in there will check it out and get back to you. Please include both the IP address and the domain name you are trying to reach.

The following log will tell you what IP's have been blocked.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\Protection-Log-yyyy-mm-dd.txt

Your post and an email reply from support gave me an idea. I used TweakUI to turn off baloon tips then, used it to turn them back on. Shazaam!, issue resolved. I think something caused a little glitch in the registry and turning them off and back on corrected the issue. Thanks for the reply.

It seems to me that this will disable ALL balloon tips.

Is it possible to change a setting so that only the MBAM IP-block balloons are suppressed?

Hi RandyVogel,

It can be a little disconcerting for some when they are unable to reach a site and don't see a notification, but yes you can.

Just untick the check box on the Protection tab that says Show tooltip balloon when malicious website is blocked.

You can use this site to check your if your IP blocker is working. You shouldn't see the page, even if you don't get the notification.
