Something killing HijackThis and Malwarebyte

Somethign has taken a hold of my notebook. When I restart in safe mode, and try to run wither Malwarebyte or HijackThis, both programs started once, but then shut down after a few seconds of scanning. Now neither program will even start.

I get the following message when trying to start either program;

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
