How does one go about NOT getting a bios infection ?

BIOS infections are nor easy nor common.  If you practice Safe Hex, it will help prevent this type of trojanization.

Good advice all around . Im doing a majority of this already ... Except backing up files.

One thing that obvious but you should add is not to download cracked software.
