Hi,

Windows Security keeps posting this virus. Trojan:HTML/Phish.BBU!MTB and don't let me quarantine or remove it.

I have noticed, though there is a similar forum post. I tried to follow the steps there. However, it still popping up to me.

Please find more details down below & I attached FRST.txt & Addition.txt generated by FRST64.exe.

containerfile: C:\Users\[my_pc_user_name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache\Cache_Data\f_000207

file: C:\Users\[my_pc_user_name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache\Cache_Data\f_000207->(SCRIPT0003)

Tried steps from the forum post.

I have run Microsoft Safety Scanner in full scan. Found nothing.

I tried ESET Onlinescanner, got the same result.

AdwCleaner also failed in a sense of cleaning this particular malware.

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 2020 ended up as the previous three options.

Could you please help me to resolve this issue?

Thank you a lot in advaced!

Cheers!

It may be an email in the Google Cache.

It is just a HTML File for a Phish.  It is not a virus.

It is only an issue IFF you you fell for the Phish and supplied User Credentials that would compromise the site(s) those credentials represent.

Clear cache & cookies

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More.
  3. Click More tools and then Clear browsing data.
  4. At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.
  5. Next to "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," check the boxes.
  6. Click Clear data.

Hi @David H. Lipman,

I have tried this option, as well. But Windows Security keep showing this to me as a virus.

I have checked my extensions & there is nothing new what I have installed recently. I use most of them for years.

I even tried to clear the folder what I mentioned above. What sort of user credentials could it be? How can I detect whether I fell or not?

As the Microsoft provided name indicates it is a trojan and not a virus. Trojan:HTML/Phish.BBU!MTB

Phish are about harvesting credentials or Personally Identifiable Information (PII).  For example a Bank Phish may try to harvest login credentials to a local or state run bank.  It could try to harvest a Gmail account or a Yahoo account Logon Name and password.  If it is a fake package Phish they may try to harvest your mailing address, name age, Credit Card and other PII.  That is what a Phis does.  Once the actor harvests the data, they may use it against you.  But you would have had to view the content of that Phish (in HTML format which is the code for rendering content in a Browser) and the provided real information.  As a residual disk file it does nothing but like Microsoft did, it can be detected.

If you completely clear the Cache then it will be removed.  If you Sync your Chrome data, it can be moved back onto your PC.

I see, I have cleared the cache several times now & the file not even existing anymore. I ran another scan & it keeps popping up.

I noticed though it was detected ten days ago. I have attached a screenshot where you may see the file is not even there. I am still not sure how to get rid of this, though.

So you are saying that Windows Defender still pops of a notification that of Trojan:HTML/Phish.BBU!MTB  being found after a Cache clearing?

  • Solution

Welcome smile.png

I'll be helping you with your computer.

Please read this post completely before beginning. If there's anything that you do not understand, please don't hesitate to ask before proceeding.

Please take note of the guidelines for this fix:

  • Please note that I am a volunteer. I do have a family, a career, and other endeavors that may prevent immediate responses that meet your schedule. Do note that the differences in time zones could present a problem as well. Your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.
  • First of all, the procedures we are about to perform are specific to your problem and should only be used on this specific computer.
  • Do not make any changes to your computer that include installing/uninstalling programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, nor running scanners or tools of any kind unless specifically requested by me.
  • Please read ALL instructions carefully and perform the steps fully and in the order they are written.
  • If things appear to be better, let me know. Just because the symptoms no longer exist as before, does not mean that you are clean.
  • Continue to read and follow my instructions until I tell you that your machine is clean.
  • If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask before performing the task that I ask of you, and please wait for my reply before you proceed.
  • Scanning with programs and reading the logs do take a fair amount of time. Again, your patience will be necessary. smile.png

Let's begin... smile.png

Please attach this file in your next reply.

Download AdwCleaner and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click AdwCleaner.exe to run it.

When AdwCleaner starts, on the left side of the window, click on “Settings” and then enable these repair actions on that tab-window
by clicking their button to the far-right for ON status

  • Delete tracing keys
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Reset Proxy
  • Reset IE Policies
  • Reset Chrome policies
  • Reset Winsock
  • Reset HOSTS file
  • Click Scan Now ...
  • When the scan has finished a Scan Results window will open.
  • Click Cancel (at this point do not attempt to Quarantine anything that is found)
  • Now click the Log Files tab ...
  • Double click on the latest scan log (Scan logs have a [S0*] suffix, where * is replaced by a number, the latest scan will have the largest number)
