Hello all.

Thank you for your responses.

ive decided not to install MSSE after all.

I have installed Avira as an on-demand scanner .Is this a safe practice as there are no noticeable slow-downs and i have no real-time processes running at all with avira.

Thanks again.

I'm running MBAM PRO and am interested running MSE along side it. Problem is, in the past MSE has caused huge CPU spikes when opening a folder full of exe files (my backup folder for instance), something avast! doesn't suffer from. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, were you able to remedy it?

As per your post # 6 in the exclude process for MSE I could not find 3 following files on my Windows 7, 64bit computer:

C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

C:Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys

C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Syd Hello and Welcome to Malwarebytes.....

As post #6 is from November of 2009, those instructions are a bit outdated now....  See below for the files that need to be excluded...

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software (not sure what version of you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe

For Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe
For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware \ mbamscheduler.exe
Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

  • Root Admin

Also please note that Microsoft Security Essentials is no longer recommended as a good antivirus product as Microsoft is no longer actively providing up to the hour updates for it and it misses many infections now days.

If you're looking for a free product then I would suggest one of the following antivirus products.

avast

Avira

Cheers
