Malwarebytes slows down Winrar significantly after latest update (v4.6.7)

Recommended Posts

When I click on an archive, I get a 2 second delay before Winrar shows the contents. This delay happens even if I only start Winrar from the desktop shortcut (without opening any archive).

If I shut down Malwarebytes, Winrar opens archives instantly.

Can I have both the speed and the protection, or am I stuck with the 2 second delay if I use Malwarebytes?

Specs: Winrar 6.24 (licensed), Malwarebytes 4.6.7 (licensed).

LE: I know the 2 second delay may not sound like much, but I need to open MANY arhives every day and it's getting annoying. Also, I tried the new Winrar 7.00 beta2 and the issue is still there.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

From your previous postings, You have ESET as well.

I would recommend creating exclusions between Malwarebytes and Your AV to help prevent any possible conflicts or performance issues.  Please add the items listed in this support article to Your AV 's allow list(s)/trust list(s)/exclusion list(s), particularly for any of its real-time protection components and likewise add Your AV 's program folder(s) (likely located under C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program Files (x86)) to Malwarebytes' Allow List using the method described under the Allow a file or folder section of this support article and do the same for its primary data folder which is likely located under C:\ProgramData (you may need to show hidden files and folders to see it).

Yes, thanks for looking into my issue thoroughly. Does it count that I paused NOD32 Antivirus and the issue is still there? I will do what you said, but since pausing NOD32 Antivirus changed nothing, I'm afraid those exclusions won't solve my issue.

Anyway, I'm glad you didn't say I'm stuck with this, so if there's a solution, I want to find it. I will do the mutual excluding you recommended and will get back here with feedback. Thank you.

If you turn off one protection at a time in Malwarebytes does it help? I would start with Ransomware.

Hey! I just finished adding the exclusions in NOD32 and the issue still persisted.

Then I read your reply and it looks like the "culprit" is the Exploit Protection. Turning that off solves my Winrar issue. Can you draw a conclusion from this?

(I still have to add exclusions in Malwarebytes for the NOD32 program files, per your original message)

Running out of ideas other than adding the WinRar exe to the allow list.

Well, thanks for your help, at least we found out the cause. I won't add Winrar to allow list and open up my system's security. But I do think this happened after the latest Malwarebytes update, I didn't have this before.

Thank you! I always keep Winrar up to date and usually don't update to betas - only this time, for testing purposes.

Since this delay issue didn't happen before, maybe there will be a fix with future Malwarebytes updates. Till then, it looks like I'll have to get used to it.

Yup same here, if you disable Exploit protection, Winrar starts up immediately again.  Enabled there is a small delay, but for me it does not bother me.

But when you open a big RAR file from about 750MB, it takes many seconds before it opens the RAR file, it you disable Exploit protection, it works fast again.

Seems that Malwarebytes is interfering with Winrar in some way.

Yep! I work with archives quite a lot and I would've noticed this, so I'm pretty certain it's caused by the latest updated. So I'm guessing (hoping!) that maybe they'll fix this with their next release.

So i am sure more users will have a problem with this, on all of my pc and some clients they all have the same problem after the latest update from Malwarebytes.

When you open for example a big ISO file that Winrar also can open up, it literally can take up to 15 seconds before the ISO file is opened. I installed the older version again from MWB, and wait for a fix in this. Better option than disable exploit protection.

I think this is a related issue... I run quite a few .BAT files (yes, I know) and since 4.6.7 upgrade, they've been running very slowly indeed.  I disabled exploit protection and they run a quick as they did before the MWB update.  Hopefully a fix will be soon so I can re-enable the protection.

  • pinkish changed the title to Malwarebytes slows down Winrar significantly after latest update (v4.6.7)

It also interferes when you open a command prompt, it takes also some seconds before it open up and see the text. It also slows down any typed in commands. Wow, this 4.6.7 version is a very bad update! Lucky i had version 4.6.6 still available here. This one works good. Another user did make an topic about this.
