Hi! This is my first time posting on this forum, but I have been having some problems with Malwarebytes recently.

So, I got my first piece of malware early December. It was from opening a dodgy link (my fault, I know). It was a relatively harmless browser hijacker -- ook.gg. I managed to remove it with a YouTube video, however, I did not manage to remove the offending file completely, and it was just sitting in my recycling bin giving me Trojans. It's also important to note than I ran several scans with Malwarebytes whilst KNOWING I had malware, and it turned up nothing.

I first noticed the Trojan via Windows Security telling me that new threats were found. I quickly neutralised the threat by quarantining the Trojan, and removing it. image.thumb.png.5f750afdb88bd0ba6ef508337ca83b69.png

Then, the next day I was made aware of ANOTHER Trojan in my laptop. This time, I did not quarantine or remove the threat, and did a Malwarebytes scan. Once again, nothing.

The offending file has been removed entirely from my laptop, so there's not really any risk anymore, but I am wondering why Malwarebytes didn't detect a literal Trojan? It surely can't have been a fake scan from Windows Security, as the file is known for carrying Trojans.

So I am very confused as to why nothing was detected by Malwarebytes. Is there something wrong with my software, or is it something else?

If it is important to know, I have the free version of Malwarebyres. Any help would be appreciated!

I'll be helping you with your computer.

Please read this post completely before beginning. If there's anything that you do not understand, please don't hesitate to ask before proceeding.

Please take note of the guidelines for this fix:

  • Please note that I am a volunteer. I do have a family, a career, and other endeavors that may prevent immediate responses that meet your schedule. Do note that the differences in time zones could present a problem as well. Your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated.
  • First of all, the procedures we are about to perform are specific to your problem and should only be used on this specific computer.
  • Do not make any changes to your computer that include installing/uninstalling programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, nor running scanners or tools of any kind unless specifically requested by me.
  • Please read ALL instructions carefully and perform the steps fully and in the order they are written.
  • If things appear to be better, let me know. Just because the symptoms no longer exist as before, does not mean that you are clean.
  • Continue to read and follow my instructions until I tell you that your machine is clean.
  • If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask before performing the task that I ask of you, and please wait for my reply before you proceed.
  • Scanning with programs and reading the logs do take a fair amount of time. Again, your patience will be necessary. smile.png
