Hi,

This is my first post, but I have recieved terrific help in the past from browsing your forum. Last night I recieved a virus, it put a small sheild in the lower left corner of the screen, would pop up internet sites and also a red box in the center forcing me to buy virus software, I believe it was system security, but it I am not positive. I did not buy anything, tried to work around the prompts and have come across this in the past. I currently have Norton anti-virus, malwarbytes and superantispyware on my computer to help resolve in past intrustions. My computer is a dell inspiron e1705 and I am running windows xp media edition. Upon recieving the virus, I immediately closed all programs and disconnected from the internet. By trying several different methods, I was finally able to get Malwarbytes to run but it did not find any infections, so next I was able to get the superantispyware software to run and it found 55 infected files. I reset my computer as directed and by superantispyware, reconnected to the internet to make sure malwarebytes was current and to fully run a check. Upon connecting to the internet, the pop-ups for the the fake spyware returned my computer was running incredibly slow so I decided disconnected from the internet and restarted my computer. Upon restarting I got a blue screen stating

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to yoru computer.

If this is the first tim you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufactuer for the driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you eed to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0x80537009, 0xF7C021BC, 0xF7C01EB8) "

I have tried to restart my computer and go into safe mode, but even after prompted, this screen returns. In other words, I have tried going through every mode to get past the screen but cannot. I will say my hard drive may be lacking in adequate space, but I am not sure if this has to do with disk space, or a virus. In any rate, I cannot get past the blue screen. I hope I don't need to completely reload windows, if so I do not have any means of reloading the operating system, and I do not want to risk loosing any files that I have not backed up. Thankfully, I have another computer which I can post from or else I would be in serious trouble. Obviously I cannot post any hijack logs, malware reports or any other documents at this time but will be happy to do once I am able. I appreciate any help, and please do not hestitate to ask any questions which my help my problem.

Thanks again in advance for any help

Hey C...

Exact same problem here, except I have one additional error. My Technical information reads:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x80537009, 0xF7C021BC, 0xF7C01EB8)

Same problem with the virus. I can help ellaborate on steps taken to try to resolve it (No luck yet tho).

You are correct in that there is no way to reboot to the operating system from the menus. I took it a few steps further and tried repairing the operating system with a OS disc. This didn't work... I couldn't boot up from my internal CD drives anymore, so I had to use an external IDE drive connected by USB to load the disc. Usually, XP errors like this can be repaired from an OS disc, but in this case there's bigger problems. The FAT (File alloccation tables) are completely scrambled. The OS disc says that the primary partition that the OS was installed on is of an "Unknown" type, that is it doesn't know if its NTFS, FAT, FAT32, EXFAT, etc. It also thinks the disc is empty, probably because it can't read it properly. End result: no repairs, and no closer to resolving this.

The only option that immediately comes to mind is a magical format :). My customer doesn't want me to do that yet, so I'm still exploring options. This occured at almost the same time as yours, so I'm wondering if this is the start of a new virus trend? Let's hope not.

I'm going to try pulling out the HDD and repairing it from another computer, if possible.

I'll post my results on here.
