Windows keeps downloading the latest/same definitions every update search

Recommended Posts

For some reason today, every time windows has continued to download the latest security definitions each time an update is searched for. This has resulted in windows downloading the same definitions every few minutes, since these updates are normally hours apart. The only thing I ran was an FRST script at 240am but this seems to have been occuring before that.

Really confused as to what's happening, currently. Was hoping to use the computer today too.

“Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.393.336.0)” has been occurring for the past hour now.

Attached a screenshot to show this.

This started occurring on the 14th as shown in the screenshot below. Those first four updates are all for the same version.

Also, every time you would press search for updates, it would find and download the latest definitions again and again. I’m going to check again in 2 hours to see if this persists.

Not really sure if the logs show anything in regards to if.

Please make a NEW System Restore Point, then do the following

Please run the Disk Cleanup utility with Admin rights.

Then pretty much select everything in the list and click OK

When done, restart the computer and see how it's running

Also, I’m wondering before I do anything, do the logs say anything about this?

I updated the ones in that post not too long ago, because after I restarted after uploading those logs, I couldn’t access windows settings for some reason. I had to restart again. Took logs and them replaced the previous ones in that post.

I might also turn my PC off and go to sleep soon, since it’s pretty late

Update before I go to bed:

In the windows update page, it doesn’t show multiple of the same definition updates, just the one. Same with virus and threat detection updates page, it only shows the first time it was installed.

So it’s only the reliability manager that’s showing multiple entries of the same thing. I know it’s not a visual bug, since every time a windows update is searched for it’ll flash the definition it downloaded on screen like it normally does. Problem is, it keeps doing it for every search like a mentioned previously.

I would like to try it later, since I don’t really want to tamper with the system restore right now.

The main reason, is because I was thinking the FIX might have something to do with it, considering whenever it’s run, the settings refuse to open unless restarted for a third time. I ended up updating the logs in that post after this happened.

Sorry if it seems like I’m being difficult now, I’m sort of viewing it as a last resort thing, and would like to find out if it’s there’s something in the logs that relates to it. I’m afraid of system restore potentially messing something up.

Forgot to mention, that I was going to try uninstalling the latest security update to see if that would work, but I don’t know where to do that.

I thought it would be under the installed updates menu, but clicking on the latest security intelligence just opened up a browser page to the Microsoft website detailing what’s new in that database update (also, the redirect the use to get you there when you click it seems like it categorised as an unsafe site or something judging by the padlock symbol)

Many MS sites and downloads do not use HTTPS thus the missing lock in the browser.

I’m doing the update cleanup right now like you said. I’m only freeing up like 5GB since I don’t have that much data aside from held over windows updates.

I made a restore point shortly before, that like you recommended. Unfortunately I only had one system restore point prior to that and It was on the 14th.

Ok, it completed and I restarted, and it still seems to be occurring.

I ended up loading the restored point I made half an hour ago. Just have to wait on it to finish.

This is really frustrating, even event viewer is showing that the same update is installed every time windows searches for an update.

It's the version number that's reappearing again and again,

Right now, if I check reliability history it'll show

"Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.393.473.0)"

Multiple times, and I don't understand why. Could this be a syncing issue in regards to updates or something, because it seems I have an update that you don't for some reason.

I’ll probably turn the PC off soon before since I’ll need to sleep.

I found out that the FIX I ran didn’t make any restore points when it was supposed to, so I assume something kept it from running properly or the FRST version was bugged or something.

Maybe that’s responsible for my predicament, since I did run it before it started.

You have  823GB free on your C: drive. Set your System Restore Points to be allowed to use at least 25GB

Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:930.88 GB) (Free:823.25 GB) (Model: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB) NTFS

I think my restore points are set to take up 90GB of space?

I’m going to try this some time tomorrow I think, since I wanted to leave it turned off for a period of time to see if that has any impact.

Since you said it won’t make any difference, I’m going to try doing that today.

Out of the four ways there, what one would you recommend?

I was leaning towards doing it through event viewer

I also just found out that in event viewer for defender specifically, it’s also only showing the initial installation in events, and not any of the subsequent ones.

I don’t understand.

Also, if I’m to clear all of these through event viewer, should I save and clear or just clear them all without saving?
