Can't download MWB on Safari on Mac

Recommended Posts

When I've tried to download MWB from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac-download on Safari, it tries to connect with the cdn website but then briefly shows a small yellow triangle with black exclamation mark on the left of the webpage (which also scrolls with the page) halfway down and the .pkg won't download. In the download bar it's showing as stopped.

That worried me a little, not going to lie, in case there was something on my Mac stopping it! So I tried downloading it on my iPhone, which worked, so I sent that to my Mac.

Having read some other posts, I checked the digital signature, which was Apple Root CA (valid) - Developer Certification Authority (valid) -  Developer ID Installer: Malwarebytes Corporation (GVZRY6KDKR) (valid), and I uploaded the .pkg to VirusTotal, which found no issues, and I see that @1PW had voted for it 5 days ago.

Based on the above, I installed it and it found no issues on my Mac, although in the Privacy & Security section of System Preferences, Apple was saying that the app was from an unidentified developer...

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue with trying to download it? And if they've had Apple saying it's not identified? For reference, I'm using Monterey 12.6.7.

Excuse the rambling and thanks so much for your help!

Hello @hugemiaow and :welcome::

I cannot duplicate what you saw when I used Ventura 13.4.1 with Safari 16.5.1 on my MBP. However, it appears that your MB4 for Mac download is otherwise valid.

What version of Safari is installed in that Monterey?

Does that Safari have any extensions?

Thank you.

Hi @1PW

Thanks for your message!

I'm running the same Safari - 16.5.1. The only extension is 1Password. I am also using Norton 360 - could that potentially be stopping it? (I know I don't need it but the paranoia in me didn't want to get rid of it until I knew I was safe from malware).

Thanks for your help :)

Hello @hugemiaow:

If you can conveniently/temporarily disable Norton 360, that would yield good data. If you have an alternative browser such as Firefox 14.0.2 that would be interesting.

Thank you.

Hello @hugemiaow:

The next time you see the error, please consider taking a Screenshot of it and attach the .png to your next reply.

Is your Norton 360 the Standard edition and is it at least version 9.1.2?

Thank you.

Hi @1PW

I didn't have Firefox to check, so I tried to download that and same error!

So, turns out it was a Safari issue, and even though I had it to allow downloads from here, it was denied for everywhere else, which was overriding this setting. Something so simple but I wouldn't have figured that out quite as quickly had you not said about Firefox.

So thank you - I appreciate your troubleshooting!
