Intermittent White Outs

Recommended Posts

Use your computer as you normally would, but keep in mind that performance may be impacted.

There's also a risk factor that your computer becomes unstable to the extent of system crashes, any important stuff should be saved regularly.

The way I interpret this: for best results, don't.

So, I won't.

Edit: 4:39 PM

@axe0

Ran driver verifier, created a restore point successfully,  wrote down name of file, restart.

Looked at the Hard Drive diagnostics which include instructions to burn a disc. I don't have an optical drive.

Test Ram includes instructions for using a USB memory stick.  I have nothing current with that amount of space.

I am going to let this pause for a bit. I'll get a couple memory sticks and try again.

@axe0 an additional note before this rests:

When purchasing memory sticks for a backup, how much memory should be available? My Dell has 8GB memory.

Yesterday, despite updating the GPU driver, the whiteout happened again, while on the forum.

Thanks.

Now that I read back through the merged topics, I don't think I did the driver verifier correctly. I do recall checking the various boxes, and finishing, but now I see within the 6 year old instructions,  THAT was the process that was supposed to run for 24 hours. End result:

  1. I do not have 24 hours worth of driver verifier info.
  2. I do not have a 256GB on a memory stick. Test Ram instructions say it's required.

Please forgive me for the confusion and uncertainty. I am a novice.

I think you mean a 256MB stick or larger? Should be relatively easy to get one?

This is some info I wrote a while ago about driver verifier that hopefully helps understand what it does.

EDIT: added screenshots because the formatting kept being messed up

@axe0 yes, 😆 I meant MB. Thanks for the additional screenshots. particularly those commands, I don't do much of those and they scare me!

The last encrypted memory stick I got was a lemon, but I am ready to throw money away again. (kidding-I won't go for encrypted this time either)

@axe0 please suggest brands of USB memory sticks-whether from NewEgg, B&H Photo, or Amazon, if available in your country. I am uninformed when it comes to time tested, reliable brands which are favored by users who know. You obviously do. I see the purpose of it is to create a backup in the event the driver verifier somehow crashes and causes a BSOD. If I had to choose between living with my whiteouts and risking a crash, I'd choose the former.

Thanks.

Be careful when using other forums. It is best to not bring up the same issues (not saying you planned on it) but many of the people here work those other forums as well including @axe0

Plus multiple people trying to help can wreck a computer as well with conflicting instructions.

@Porthos Thank you for the caution.

Moderators here have informed me (months ago) of the same things you state here, plus now inactive members mentioned the same.  I've noticed expert helpers prefacing their comments with "You have posted this same problem on (ForumX, Date_____), so it is reasonable to assume that before anyone invests time and energy in a solution, that the question is searched elsewhere first. All that is reasonable and warranted.

I've valued everyone's advice and help, by virtue of the fact I now have a new system based solely on your recommendation, as well as new peripherals based on others here. If there is an unspoken issue which is causing distress behind the scenes, let's resolve privately. As of this writing I am unaware of anything except sending out a message about attachment purging with various names. That was a mistake and I regret it.

If possible, please give me the benefit of the doubt that I am not planning on bringing up the same issues, or any issues at all.

I have 6 clients using the same exact system with no issues for several months now (Believe me they would tell me). I wish I had a clue about your current issue. I have always been a visual or hands-on person when it comes to strange unexpected issues with computers. When I physically worked on computers, I would figure it out or have the customer complain to Dell for a replacement if under warranty.

I only brought your membership to Bleeping Computer so you would not fall into the multi-help forum merry-go-round some others have gone thru. Was not a dig at you personally.

This is a new ViewSonic monitor. Your recommendation was the Dell, Dave's recommendation was the ViewSonic.

The recommendation for the "system" was a combination of the time (about 1.5 hours), you spent with me on private messages along with the actual PC. I admit that was my shorthand way of saying you did a lot.

AdvancedSetup has done several TeamViewer sessions, and if anything was seriously wrong, I am assuming it would have been noticed.

There is zero danger of me falling into a multi-help forum merry go round. The reason is I have total trust in everyone here. I wish that were reciprocal, but I can only imagine after decades of enduring bad behavior from forum hoppers, clients, whomever, you'd want to avoid it. Theoretically I know it wasn't personal, but it did hurt.

I actually have no reason to not trust you. Sorry, you felt otherwise. You only introduced yourself over there. So there was no issue.

I have no knowledge of what you have seen in your travels here.

Again, Sorry, it was not intentional.

Please carry on with the topic issue.

Maurice has been clear about that, yardbird mentioned something as well I think, and a member who'd been "helped" admitted that he's a "bouncer."

Thank you Porthos. I admit I can be "sensitive."

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: availability of Transcend JetFlash 920 & Dell support ticket

@AdvancedSetup because you posted those links in ID:1572705

1. I can order 128 from Amazon (available immediately) and only 256 from B&H Photo, on special back order (available in 2-4 weeks)

Buried deep in the instructions over multiple pages, lost track of where, it says I'd need 256. Should I wait?

2. Yesterday, while streaming media from the Thirteen/PBS site the machine gave me a blue screen, rebooted by itself and my tabs were restored. This is the second time it's done this. Is it time to go and open up a service support request with Dell? I am under warranty.

In that same topic: I think that Axe0 replied to you about the size already. It's 256MB not GB

I actually ordered the 1TB SSD from Transcend last night. Way overkill for you but with the work I do I think it will come in handy

All right, I guess I don't have a handle on the GB MB issue.

I saw his answer, but when I search, everything says GB. Anyway, may be a moot point, so I will plan on more, not less.
