Hi,

I just wanted to make a thread about Authenticator apps and if anyone has any personal recommendations for them.

Ive been using the Google Authenticator app, but my eyebrow raised when I saw them release an update which added the ability to store codes in your Google account.

It’s optional, but it got me thinking about alternatives.

There probably isn't one best solution for everyone but here are some articles that may help you make up your own mind

OK I see that got some attention, perhaps unintentionally. I didn't mean I was going to go DO IT, I wanted to see if it was OPTIONAL.

Theoretically, I can see the point that even if it was, those codes would still be vulnerable and the point is to set things up without vulnerability, anywhere. Am I right?

P.S I'll start here. I do have several authenticator programs, including a mandatory Microsoft one, but it's always good to know exactly how it works instead of blindly trusting. FYI, I use one to log on here without fail.

When they fail, that's when the real learning begins. It can be difficult and time consuming to recover from failure of one of these programs.

I use a few different ones for different purposes. I did have one fail a couple weeks ago, but because I had a backup on another device I was able to use that one to correct the other one.

There is always some amount of risk that cannot always be avoided. Reducing the risk is what you want to do when possible.

Having good solid external backups that you don't keep connected all the time is also quite important these days

Hey @Badran, if you remember where you saw this, I'd like to take a look. Thanks.

I think it was one of the most recent updates that added that ability.

I declined, so I’m still using these codes without having them stored on the cloud, which is for the best I think.

I feel like you’re more at risk at losing something online, as opposed to losing a physical device.

Curious. Thanks for checking in. I have been steered clear of this by our forum admins. It looks like you have the right idea about risk, which I have yet to fully develop. When adding Etsy to Authenticator, I remember seeing saving those codes somewhere. At the time, I found that a little strange.  Realistically, since I'm so new to this, I wouldn't know where to find them, even if I did! 🙃

Those could be backup codes provided by Etsy.

Normally, when you add an Authenticator as a 2FA option, most services will provide a series of backup codes to take note of in case you lose your Authenticator.

I normally note them down like I do with any sort of account recovery code.

Now that you mention it, I think they were.

OK, I just got a brand new little Artist's Loft journal, in soothing gray. It will be the perfect place to keep all these codes, notes, data and (mind numbing) details. ☺️ As if I don't have enough notebooks and journals already.
