Malwarebytes 4.5.29 not seeing that I have Browser Guard installed

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have Browser Guard installed on my default browser, Google Chrome. However, Malwarebytes does not see this and hit me with : "Dang! Your current default browser isn't compatible". See attached image for this warning. I have done every step noted here, I believe, and used the Support removal tool to reinstall the program. See attached logs. I also use Firefox and Edge, even with BG installed on them the warning persists. What can I do?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

The computer needs some maintenance work. Please run the following fix @Zandor

NOTE: Please read all of the information below before running this fix.

  • NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine.
  • Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Once the fix has been completed, please attach the file FIXLOG.TXT to your next reply

Farbar program:   FRSTEnglish.exe

Save the attached file:  FIXLIST.TXT to this folder C:\Users\conny\Downloads\

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRSTEnglish.exe, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Please make sure you disable any real-time antivirus or security software before running this script. Once completed, make sure you re-enable it.

Run the Farbar program with Admin rights and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The fix may possibly take up to 60 minutes to complete

If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log named Fixlog.txt in the same folder you ran the Farbar program from. Please attach that log on your next reply.

  1. NOTE:  This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files. It will also run a disk check on the restart to ensure disk integrity.
  2. NOTE: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications may be automatically closed. Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies will also be removed in most, but not all cases.
  3. NOTE: As part of this fix, it will also reset the network to default settings including the firewall. If you have custom firewall rules you need to save please export or save them first before running this fix.

The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome, and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Discord cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

Thanks

Thank you, will try this out. Just so I know, why is maintenance needed, is something wrong with my PC? Should I be worried for something specific?

Oh, meant to quote only a part of that, seems like my response was formatted wrongly now. My question was, if it's hard to decipher:

You have well over a thousand invalid scheduled tasks. The script will remove those and validate Microsoft files, etc and do general clean up as shown in the notes above.

Please make a new System Restore Point and run the fix as shown.

Thank you

Oh, that's odd. Atm I only have Smart scan activated so it should do the scans when I'm Idle. One more question, I may be stupid, but where do I find this Farbar program that you are mentioning? I only see a textfile in the response. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Unfortunately not, can't find it anywhere. Was that a file I got while using the support tool? I may have accidentally removed it from the downloads-folder after I posted here the first time. Do I have to run the support tool one more time to gather the file in that case?

You can download it again from here

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your computer

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

Thank you

I hope I got it right now, attached the file.

Yes, that ran well.

Please run the following now

SecurityCheck by glax24

I would like you to run a tool named SecurityCheck to inquire about the current security update status of some applications.

  • Download SecurityCheck by glax24: https://tools.safezone.cc/glax24/SecurityCheck/SecurityCheck.exe
  • If Microsoft SmartScreen blocks the download, click through to save the file
  • This tool is safe.   Smartscreen is overly sensitive.
  • If SmartScreen blocks the file from running click on More info and Run anyway
  • Right-click  with your mouse on the Securitycheck.exe  and select "Run as administrator"  and reply YES to allow to run & go forward
  • Wait for the scan to finish. It will open a text file named SecurityCheck.txt Close the file.  Attach it with your next reply.
  • You can find this file in a folder called SecurityCheck, C:\SecurityCheck\SecurityCheck.txt

Okay, please do the following with Google Chrome which shows to be your default browser.

Please follow the directions from the following topic.

Then restart the computer.

Then reinstall Browser Guard

https://www.malwarebytes.com/browserguard

Let me know if Malwarebytes is still showing an issue with Browser Guard compatibility after that.

It did not change anything within the client, unfortunately. Thank you so much for helping me out though, I appreciate it. Anything else I can try? Seems like the client can not find the add-on installation or something.

I'm sorry but I find it very difficult to believe you carried out those instructions that fast.

Please follow the directions as requested again.

I did the steps that were mentioned, however, after I click turn off sync and then confirm with my Google authenticator it directly turns off sync. Then I cleared the data as mentioned, the only difference is that I did not get logged out from my account. I did the steps exactly as mentioned, uninstalled the Browser Guard, restarted the PC and then installed it again. Maybe Chrome has made it easier to stop syncing or changed it up, since I did not get logged out. I figured it was enough to turn off sync and then clear data through the page mentioned in the article, maybe I did something wrong, but I did the same process once more and it did not result in any other outcome. I have Browser Guard on all my browsers though, maybe I should uninstall it on all but my standard browser? I'm doing my very best here...

Thank you very much for trying.

Let's do the following.

How many browsers do you have on your system now?

Sorry for taking up your time. I have Edge, Chrome and Firefox installed atm. I'm logged in on all of them and therefore is syncing on all three browsers with their respective "way of syncing", if that matters in any way.
