Malwarebytes is crashing during scan and it found 3 virus so far but

Recommended Posts

Im on andoid using a galaxy Note 9 android 9 ,So i cannot remove the mallwhere that malwarebytes found because the app shuts down with no error wilst scanning  the files  I'm using the free app from google play store if that helps I dont know what to do

Malwarebytes will find 3 or 4 virus then the app will just close with no error and I'll be back on the home screen

I tried again this time it found only 2 viruses then shut down I've downloaded every antivirus app from the store and run full scans and my phone comes back clean even used the built in android one phone came back clean but malwarebytes has found a ton of threats got up to 7 threats then shut down at 35 min

I've submitted a support ticket  using the updated app that crashes and will not finish a scan 4257232

I've also  disabled battery optimisation  for malwaremalwarebytes  like I read in an old thread still it shuts down mid scan after detecting loads of threats

so wilst testing I pressed stop when it detected 2 threats because it crashes before it can detect more usually. But when I stopped the scan it would let me see the threats the 2 it let me view were quick settings app and that is not a virus or bad in any way as it's been on my phone 5 years and I use it daily and the other one was package disabler pro that I have  a paid subscription for they were classed as pua  orange threats .I never got to see what the other threats were as it would crash.before finishing

so i installed an old version of malwarebytes from 2020 and it ran without detecting the pua apps I use and finished without crashing.so that why the first scan worked and said no threats, then I updated the app did the scan again and it detected a load of threats then crashed every time so it's the latest update that causes the issue with crashing on my galaxy Note 9 on android 9.

woukd you be able to check if I have mallwhere on my device because the reason I ran the scan in the first place was because I saw something at the top of my screen flash up saying something had been installed and as I've said I have my phone and all my apps to never auto update including the google play store and google play services

so I'll be keeping this old version of the app installed for now

Hi @Flaws39,

We are sorry you are experiencing this issue. Please follow the steps below.

  1. Go to settings ---> apps and find/click Malwarebytes in the App info list
  2. Go to Storage & cache
    1. Click Clear Storage
    2. Click Clear cache
  3. Click the Back arrow to go back to Malwarebytes main App Info screen
  4. Click Uninstall
  5. Go to Google PLAY store and re-install Malwarebytes
  6. Restart your device

If this does not help, please check if there any other security (anti-virus) application installed on your device and uninstall any other security apps.

I know you stated that you already went through the process of disabling battery optimization for Malwarebytes, but I would double check that it is disabled.

If you could grab a screenshot of the detections when you stop the scan early, that would be helpful.

The latest build of the mallwherebytes app will not run on my device I've installed it many times it closes after detecting the pua apps.can I send my data via ticket again?I'm currently using the older build of the mallwherebytes app as it runs correctly without crashing.sonif I send you my data can you check it's all good because scanning my phone with the slightly older build of malwarebytes says my phone is clean.

The latest version says I have a couple of potentially unwanted apps even those those apps are fine legit apps from the play store

Ok so I've uninstalled the old malwarebytes and installed the latest version I'll take a screen shot stopping the scan after it find a few pua apps

Ok guys so I clicked stop scan after finder the first 2 imo false positives if I continue to let it scan when it gets to the files then it closes and shutsdown back to my home screen these 2 apps are legit used daily for many years .before the latest update to malwarebytes yesterday this was not an issue.so I'm going to have to uninstall this new version and install the version just before the update again

Hi @Flaws39,

Okay, I see what's going on here.  The Android/PotentialRansom warning is from our advanced ransomware scanner.  Apps that have elevated privileges and that have been installed using side loading (anything installed outside of Google Play) are flagged as potential ransomware.  I see that you have a lot of sideloaded apps, thus why they are being detected.  Installation from outside the Play Store plus elevated privileges are big red flags. Therefore, we warn our customers that a suspicious app was installed that displays ransomware like properties. It’s up to the user to ignore our warnings or not.

The reason you are not getting this warning in our older versions is that it was not working correctly.  Our latest version correctly detects these as Android/PotentialRansom.  You can either uninstall the flagged apps and install from Google Play, or ignore them in Malwarebytes.

Hi @Flaws39,

Could you send me a screenshot of the battery optimization with it disabled for Malwarebytes?  This issue is usually associated with battery optimization.

Even more digging so I found the last version that works for my phone version 3.11.0.111 it finds 4  threats and completes the scan wich is very nice, here are the screen shots I've tried all the versions that are newer and they all crash this is the newest version that works without crashing.so I'm happy that I have a pretty new version of mallwherebytes working now but hopefully you can fix the latest version soon.i dont have any virus on my phone as you can see so it's all good.these are not threats as package disaber pro is a paid for app you can only buy on there website and I pay a yearly subscription, and quick setting was from a legit apk site and it's been on my phone for 4 years no worrys at all as this is just warning me that these apps were installed outside the play store

@Flaws39,

I added those apps to our whitelist.  They will no longer be detected in future database versions.

Thanks buddy can you ask the devs to fix the update so it will not crash on android 9 devices? Because if o update this version it will break it so for now I can just wait
