Malwarebytes Privacy bypasses OpenDNS

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am trying to protect our children's screen time and access to various social media platforms via the use of OpenDNS; Cloud Delivered Enterprise Security by OpenDNS

The OpenDNS nameservers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, which I have configured into our home router to access.

Now this is where things get weird...when I test the configuration of OpenDNS on iPads, iPhones or Android devices all without Malwarebytes Privacy installed...OpenDNS works...boom, problem fixed...but on all the laptops that have Malwarebytes Privacy installed, the laptop seems to be able to bypass OpenDNS!

I manually tried to setup an 'Alternative DNS' in the Malwarebytes Privacy setting, but this doesn't seem to work...does anyone have any ideas how to get around this?

Yes, it uses it's own private DNS that is secure and does not log the DNS entries like OpenDNS does. Years from now OpenDNS will have a record of every single site your device has ever visited. Some people don't care, others find that quite appalling.

OK...so Malwarebytes Privacy uses its own private DNS, which bypasses OpenDNS, so I have no real fix to my problem.

How can I then setup Malwarebytes Privacy to block specific websites like Facebook or YouTube?

You can do it a couple of ways @Figtree_2525

To block Facebook or YouTube you can modify the hosts file and that will block it, or you could use a browser extension named uBlock Origin to block it but it would only block it in that browser not in other applications.

Modifying the hosts file would block all applications on your computer from accessing Facebook or YouTube

If you want or need further information on doing that @Figtree_2525 please let us know and also what version of Windows you're using.

Thank you
