Computer and network performance issue with 4.5.22 update

Recommended Posts

I've been having performance issues I hadn't had before and I just figured out what it was - Malwarebytes that I had recently updated to 4.5.22.

Whenever I'm copying files over network to this computer, OR downloading from FTP to this computer at speeds over about 300mbps, it's causing system lock ups, audio stuttering and temporary audio lock ups.

The issue only occurs with Malwarebytes (v4.5.22) running.

As soon as I shutdown Malwarebytes, even when mid-transfer, performance resumed.  If I start Malwarebytes again, the issue resumes.  I didn't see a large increase in CPU usage with MBAM running, but it's definitely interfering with the system and appears to be interrupting the PCI bus; interrupting sound on my Soundblaster Z, as well as causing Windows to lock up intermittently during data transfer.

These are the devices that are directly affected in some way, but only when data transfer is higher.  :

Bus 5, Device 0, Function 0    Creative SB Recon3D PCIe Audio Controller
Bus 0, Device 31, Function 2    Intel 82801HB(M)/IB(M) ICH8(M)/ICH9(M) - SATA RAID Controller
Bus 0, Device 25, Function 0    Intel Ethernet Connection I217-V
Bus 0, Device 31, Function 0    Intel Z87 Chipset - LPC Interface Controller [C-2]
Bus 6, Device 0, Function 0    LSI SAS2208 PCI Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 Controller
Bus 2, Device 0, Function 0    Samsung NVMe Controller [144D-A804] [NoDB]

The network speed (1gbe) of the data copy during testing was 953mbps, which is as much as I can ask out of it.  The issue with MBAM appears to be related to the data throughput over the NIC, but affects both Northbridge and Southbridge devices.  If the data transfer is low (for example, 35MiB/s over FTP), there is no issue.  If it's 70MiB/s, the issue is apparent, but not severe.  If I let go of the reigns and use up to/over 100MiB/s of bandwidth, OR if I max out the data transfer speed over LAN, with MBAM running, the system is unusable and I can't even listen to the audio from TV (routes through PC to AMP) because it's being severely affected by MBAM somehow.

Since this issue appears to have just began with the recent update, I'd like to get this tracked down and fixed.  At this rate, I'm unable to carry out normal duties with MBAM running.

Is there somewhere I can privately post the results?  I don't want user, hardware MACs and other data displayed in a public forum.

Even though it just seems to have happened with the latest version, You are also running ESET and Private internet access.

I would recommend creating exclusions between Malwarebytes and Your AV to help prevent any possible conflicts or performance issues.  Please add the items listed in this support article to Your AV 's allow list(s)/trust list(s)/exclusion list(s), particularly for any of its real-time protection components and likewise add Your AV 's program folder(s) (likely located under C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program Files (x86)) to Malwarebytes' Allow List using the method described under the Allow a file or folder section of this support article and do the same for its primary data folder which is likely located under C:\ProgramData (you may need to show hidden files and folders to see it).

Also, please refer to this support article which lists several known applications which conflict with the Web Protection in Malwarebytes currently, which includes Private Internet Access.

Although none of the software appears to be conflicting, I have followed the suggestions.  What I can say for sure is, the Web Protection module is the fault.  If I disable it, the issue no longer persists.

The performance of the Web Protection module is clearly the issue.  There are no issues when reading/moving data over networks, but only writing data over the NIC with the Web Protection module active.
