Malware Removal

Recommended Posts

:) I have tried so hard to fix this, read every forum I can find, and followed every step to the word. Somehow while I was at work my computer contracted this "Security System" wormie crap, and keeps saying it is infected with lsas.blaster.keyloger. I have found this to be quite common, with the most simple result being to clear all Temporary Internet Files, and cookies in Safe Mode, run anit-malware and restart. I went into Safe Mode (There Now) cleared everything, turned my modem off, and booted up like normal. The Security system thing had to be deleted, but it was fine. Then (HERE IS MY ISSUE) I downloaded Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes, it installed properly. I clicked the 2 radial buttons at the end, looked good, but that is as far as it goes. It won't update, it will not scan. It won't even open. The same has proven true for My Norton Anti-Virus, and AVG protection. I thought I would be crafty, and "Start from my last known good configuration", this does nothing. So I opted for a System Restore....NO LUCK! I go through the Wizard, choose a date, hit next, then hit next again, and NOTHING!!! I am going nuts! I can't keep my computer in Safe mode forever...what do I do??? Thanks for reading, and help is appreciated!!!

Hello and Welcome to Malwarebytes.

I will help you clean your system but let me ask you a couple of questions first.

1. You say this is a work computer, typically someone from an IT department that handles computer support would be the one to clean the system, where or why don't you have someone to do this? Just want to make sure as some Companies have policies against users doing this and I wouldn't want you to get in trouble.

2. MBAM is not free for business use, only for home users.

3. Do you have local Admin rights on the system in order to clean it?

Thank you so much for offering to help! I greatly appreciate it. I am sorry my first post was a little mis-worded. I was at work when my computer crashed. My fiance was at home, trying to access "AOL" he says. It is not a work related computer, it is in my home, for personal use only. I DID ask the IT guy at work to help, but he asked for $119 and hour, and I make about 1/15 of that. I still can not get anything to run that will fix the problem itself. I can only scan with Hijack This, here is my log file! I really hope you can help! Thanks you SOOOOOO Much for your kindness!!!

First please open NOTEPAD and turn off the Word Wrap

Then try to run the following. Make sure you disable your Anti-Virus first. Keep the Internet connection on and allow Combofix to download the Recovery Console and install it for you automatically.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.

To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."

If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..

This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

Wow...so that was AMAZING! I am having to post my Combo-Fix and Hijack This logs in separate replies, because it tells me my reply is too large...However I want to add that my internet was quick to load after the scan, all appears to be well. I will wait for your response before I make any further moves. Thank you so much for your help, an entire lifetime can not express my gratitude!

**It will not let me post ComboFix log, I will have to attach it...sorry, if there is another way to post them, feel free to let me know! Thanks again!! Updated Hijack This is below:

STEP 01

Did you set this on your own? NameServer = 85.255.0.0,85.255.0.0 if not then you need to remove it and set it back to default.

STEP 02

Download but do not yet run ComboFix

If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop

download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire contents of the Code box below, including blank lines

KILLALL::
File::
C:\32788R22FWJFW.0.tmp
c:\windows\system32\C963729D50.sys
c:\documents and settings\smrto\Application Data\MSA\mscj.exe
c:\documents and settings\smrto\application data\msa\cja48252.exe
Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"mscj.exe"=_
"cja48252"=_

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the Combo-Fix.exe icon as shown:

CFScript.gif

  • Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.
  • It may identify that Recovery Console is not installed. Please accept when asked if you wish it to be installed.
When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post back the Combofix log on your next reply.

I am unable to complete this now, because I must leave for work, but I wanted to look at it. I have a question about

STEP 01

"Did you set this on your own? NameServer = 85.255.0.0,85.255.0.0 if not then you need to remove it and set it back to default."

I don't know anything about that, not even what it is. I did not change it to this, because I have no clue as to how to do that. I tried to locate it, but I could not find it to restore it to default.

I only have to work for a short time today, and so I should be able to complete all scans, and post all logs before this evening. Thanks again for your help!

Add this to the list of things to do then and it should remove it.

With all other applications closed (Taskbar empty), open HijackThis again

and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{9B1D8E21-44A2-4095-8B3A-C8214BE25F35}: NameServer = 85.255.0.0,85.255.0.0

  • O17 - HKLM\System\CS15\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.0.0,85.255.0.0
Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should
Create a New Restore Point
to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.

Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.

Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.

Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to
"roll-back"
to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is

:
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Programs
    >
    Accessories
    >
    System Tools
    and click "
    System Restore
    ".

  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on
    START
    >
    RUN
    > and type in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    and click OK

  • Choose the radio button marked "
    Create a Restore Point
" on the first screen then click "
    Next
    ".

  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "
    Create
    ".

  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

  • Then use the
    Disk Cleanup
to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.

  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Run
    and type:
    Cleanmgr.exe

  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "
    Ok
". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

  • Click the "
    More Options
" tab, then click the "
    Clean up
    " button under System Restore.

  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "
Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?
    "

  • Click
    Yes
    , then click Ok.

  • Click
    Yes
    again when prompted with "
Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
    "

  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

  • On the
    Disk Cleanup
    tab, if the
    System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores
entry is available remove them also.

  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.
