I've been trying to get help with this since Saturday, and I am beginning to think the MBAM forums is my last hope.

On Saturday I noticed that I began experiencing pop up advertisements. I believe they have been happening for a while (one to two weeks), but I did not notice a major influx of them until Saturday. They seemed to revolve around use of YouTube, but recently (yesterday and today) the pop ups began happening sporadically. They'd come every five-ten minutes for a few hours and then stop for a few hours.

I have done scans in safe mode with Norton Anti-Virus, Spybot, and Malewarebytes. Everytime they came up clean save for one file on Sunday which showed a Trojan file that was taken care of by Malewarebytes.

For the next few hours I had no issues, but by that night (and after once again accessing YouTube) I began experiencing pop ups and a slight lag every now and then in my internet speed. I had a few issues getting simple tasks like signing out of e-mail or advancing pages to work without refreshing once or twice.

I have come to the end of my rope and I need to know what is going on so I can get back to work (I am a freelance writer and I am approaching a deadline that I may not be able to meet if I have not established what I have and delete it.

Today, I have seen no pop ups or re-directs. Only a few minor slow downs in internet speed. Since this is a new development, I ran HijackThis again, and I was forced to run it as an administrator for some cause. Here is the new file:

Well assuming you can run MBAM now please run the following. Make sure to UPDATE the rules first before scanning.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

    [*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

    [*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

    [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

    [*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

    [*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Here is the followup MBAM log after the reboot. I should point out that when I restarted the computer brought up the file location (c:\ProgramData\sajigesa\sajigesa.dll) and said that it could not be found. I am assuming that is a good thing, but I thought i better pass that information along as well.

Download but do not yet run ComboFix

If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

I was unable to post the log. When the log posted, I was unable to do anything on my computer. If I attempted to load a browser it stated that a component or file of some sort was missing. I was afraid to attempt to copy the log (which I should have attempted anyway I suppose), and I rebooted the computer.

I was forced to reboot once during the scan as it found a rootkit and stated that the reboot had to be performed. It then scanned for about ten minutes, put up the log, but I was unable to run anything until I rebooted.

My apologies if this has made things more difficult.

STEP 01

Okay try the following.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

    [*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

    [*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

    [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

    [*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

    [*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

STEP 02

Look for and open C:\Combofix.txt and post that back.

STEP 03

Please download and run these tools which are designed to restore some standard policy settings. They are not harmful.

    VArestorepolicies.INF
  • Download this INF repair file from here: VArestorepolicies.zip by MS-MVP Miekiemoes
  • Unzip or open the file VArestorepolicies.zip
  • Open the folder VArestorepolicies and Right-click the file inside, VArestorepolicies.INF and choose Install

    FixPolicies.exe
  • Download this self-extracting ZIP archive from here: FixPolicies.exe by MS-MVP Bill Castner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close
  • These fixes may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes on your next startup. You can safely run these utilities again.

Disable the Spybot Tea Timer - DO NOT continue until you've disabled the Tea Timer

Disable Teatimer

First step:

  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)

  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on
    Resident Protection
    , then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure
    Resident Protection
    is now
    Unchecked
    . The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.

  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on
    Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D

  • Click
    Mode
    , choose
    Advanced Mode

  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click
    Tools

  • then, also in left panel, click
    Resident
    shows a red/white shield.

  • If your firewall raises a question, say
    OK

  • In the
    Resident protection status
    frame,
    Uncheck
    the box labeled
    Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active

  • OK
    any prompts.

  • Use
    File, Exit
    to terminate Spybot

  • Reboot
    your machine for the changes to take effect.

Then let's try the Combofix again.

Download a NEW fresh copy and run it. Make sure your Anti-Virus is disabled.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts

If you still cannot get this to run, try booting into Safe Mode, and run it there.

To boot into Safe Mode, tap F8 after BIOS, and just before the Windows logo appears. A list of options will appear, select "Safe Mode."

If this doesn't work either, try the same method (above method), but name Combofix.exe to iexplore.exe instead, or winlogon.exe..

This because It also happens in some cases that malware blocks EVERY process except for what is in its own whitelist, so this whitelist also includes system important processes such as iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe...

Once again after the ComboFix scan ran, I had to reboot my computer to get programs to operate. Any time I clicked on anything it said a file or something associated with the program was scheduled for deletion (that scares me every time.)

I did manage to get the ComboFix log saved this time, however. I learned from my mistakes.

Okay please run the following which should hopefully finish things up.

STEP 01

Download but do not yet run ComboFix

If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the Combo-Fix.exe icon as shown:

  • Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.
  • It may identify that Recovery Console is not installed. Please accept when asked if you wish it to be installed.
    When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post back the Combofix log on your next reply.

STEP 02

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

    [*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

    [*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

    [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

    [*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

    [*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then post back the MBAM log and a new Hijackthis log.

I haven't had any pop ups, redirects, or any type of slowdown since your first set of instructions. It has been running very well since the first set of scans you instructed me to do, in fact.

Thank you for the kind words and the offer but no need. If you do want to spend a little money and add better protection then if you're not running the registered version of MBAM that might be a wise purchase. Comes with Lifetime support for home users and protects files and IP.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-VISTA

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon.

  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Uncheck
    All drives

  • Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".

  • Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore-Vista

  • Click the
    Vista/Start
    icon

  • Right Click >> Computer

  • Click
    Properties
    .

  • Click the
    System Protection tab
    .

  • Checkmark All drives
    that were selected previously then click "Apply".

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Enable automatic Windows Update on your system in Control Panel, or at least manually scan each week for updates.
