Too much time for any scan

Recommended Posts

 Hi,

I've been running Malwarebytes premium for few years. I'm facing this strange behaviour that started few weeks ago.

Whenever I decide to scan some files (or a folder) by rightclicking them and click "scan with Malwarebytes", everytime it now takes around 15, 30 minutes (or more!) before the effective scan starts: the window scan immediately open but, you can see as per attached file, it takes always a lot (searching for updates?) before the files are scanned (and when the files begin to be really scanned, it takes then very few moments as it has to be to complete the process).

Please note also that I checked manually for the update before I started the scan (so the program should skip the search for updates in few seconds, but it doesn't).

Problem #2 (that most probably it's not related or maybe yes): from time to time (it's happened right now) without haven't done anything, a messagge error appears (Malwarebytes functioning has been interrupted, the program will be restarted), MB shuts down and restarts. (I enclose a picture).

Thanks for your help. Ricky

Please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

Thanks

Here is the required file

First turn off rootkit scanning.

I would  also recommend creating exclusions between Malwarebytes and Your AV to help prevent any possible conflicts or performance issues.  Please add the items listed in this support article to Your AV 's allow list(s)/trust list(s)/exclusion list(s) particularly for any of its real-time protection components and likewise add Your AV 's program folder(s) (likely located under C:\Program Files and/or C:\Program Files (x86)) to Malwarebytes' Allow List using the method described under the Allow a file or folder section of this support article and do the same for its primary data folder which is likely located under C:\ProgramData (you may need to show hidden files and folders to see it).

I do not know what type of file or folder you are right click scanning but if it is any of the following fie types you are wasting your time.

Malwarebytes does not target script files during a scan.. That means MB will not target; JS, HTML, VBS, .CLASS, SWF, BAT, CMD, PDF, PHP, etc.

It also does not target documents such as; PDF, DOC, DOCx, XLS, XLSx, PPT, PPS, ODF, etc.

It also does not target media files;  MP3, WMV, JPG, GIF, etc.

Malwarebytes will block execution of files like these only with the anti-exploit module of the paid program.

As recommendend,

- I excluded the rootkit scan

- I inserted the exclusions in Bitdefender AV as suggested  in the MB support webpage

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mwac.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamchameleon.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\farflt.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbae64.sys

Just to try , I've started now a scan of the FRSTEnglish.exe and mb-support-1.8.7.918.exe files that I've downloaded some hour ago to provide the support.... it's running for 14 minutes ... well finally the task has been completed... after 15 minutes. It's not normal.

Please note that  normally I'm used to scan .exe files or archives (.zip, .rar. etc).

Hello  and  :welcome:     @ricky1973

My screen name is AdvancedSetup and I will assist you with your system issues.

Let's keep these principles as we proceed. Make sure to read the entire post below first.

  • Please follow all steps in the provided order and post back all requested logs
  • Please attach all log files to your post, unless otherwise requested
  • Temporarily disable your antivirus or other security software first. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans have been completed.
  • Temporarily disable Microsoft SmartScreen to download the software below if needed. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
  • Searching, detecting, and removing malware isn't instantaneous and there is no guarantee to repair every system.
  • Before we start, please make sure that you have an external backup, not connected to this system, of all private data.
  • Do not run online games while the case is ongoing. Do not do any free-wheeling or risky web-surfing.
  • Only run the tools I guide you to use. Please don't run any other scans, download, install or uninstall any programs while I'm working with you.
  • Cracked, Hacked, or Pirated programs are not only illegal but also can make a computer a malware victim. Having such programs installed is the easiest way to get infected. It is the leading cause of ransomware encryption. It is at times also a big source of current Trojan infections. If there are any on the system you should uninstall them before we proceed.
  • Please be patient and stick with me until I give you the "all clear". We don't want to waste your time, please don't waste ours.
  • If your system is running Discord, please be sure to Exit it while this case is ongoing.

To begin, please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting. This is a report only.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Thank you

You have well over a thousand entries for software installations and the computer appears to be at least 8 years old and you're running an old mechanical hard drive.

BIOS: AMI 80.52 11/11/2014
Motherboard: MSI 2AE0
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-670K Quad-Core Processor

Drive c: (Windows) (Fixed) (Total:1850.48 GB) (Free:26.81 GB) (Model: ST2000DM001-1CH164)

I'm sorry, but there probably isn't too much you're going to do to speed the scan up at this point.

You might consider possibly buying an SSD hard drive and reinstalling Windows which could improve some speed.

Hi,

thanks for your kind reply.

I know, my pc it's quite old but this should not be the problem... MB worked perfectly until few weeks ago. Even Bitdefeders scans start immediately and work properly.

By the way, I just uninstalled and reinstalled MB and it looks now that it's working fine as it used to :)

Thanks for your care

ciao

Ricky
