do I have a virus? malware? help!

Recommended Posts

I ran malwarebytes and initially it said I was infected w/ trojan.bho.h and trojan.vundo, but now it says I'm not infected, however it still seems asthouh my comp is infected. When I do a search on google, I get a chain of advertisement sites and sites I select on my google search lead me to alternative sites rather than the ones I select. I have my popup blocker on "high". Is this tabjacking? or do I still have a virus? I have microsoft essentials and windows defender. Doesn't seem to help much.

Hi gizzy

There is no need for an uninstall list at this point, please do the following:

Multiple Anti Virus programs.

You are operating multiple Anti Virus programs on your computer:

  • Norton
    Microsoft Security Essentials

It is NOT safe to have more than one anti-virus installed on a system, and that doing so not only does not provide better protection, it will actually cause additional problems. Anti-virus programs patch into the system kernel. Having more than one anti-virus patching into the system kernel will not only destabilize a system, it can corrupt system files and it WILL cause crashes! You MUST remove all but one anti-virus program.

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove to uninstall only one of the following:

Norton

Microsoft Security Essentials

Note: I would remove Norton if the subscription is not up to date and you cannot - or do not wish to - pay for it. If you do choose to uninstall Norton, it is recommended to run the Norton Removal Tool. The download and instructions for use can be found here.

ATF-Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

As you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform full scan, then click on Scan
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest

Note: MBAM may ask to reboot your computer so it can continue with the removal process, please do so immediately.

Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)

[*]Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

In your next reply:

  1. MBAM log
  2. RSIT log.txt
  3. RSIT info.txt

I cant manage to delete Norton because it's not on the add/remove options in control panel. I attempted to delete it through the link provided to uninstall Norton, but could not download because of my "infection", so I attempted searching for it and deleting files related. The following is my malware log. I ran RSIT, but onlint the log.txt. came up and not the info.txt.

Hi gizzy, sorry for the delay.

I ran RSIT, but onlint the log.txt. came up and not the info.txt.

The log I need can be found here:

C:\RSIT\Info.txt

CKScanner

Download CKScanner from here

  • Important - Save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

In your next reply:

  1. CKFiles.txt
  2. RSIT Info.txt

Cracks/Keygens/Warez etc.

c:\documents and settings\christine wong\recent\pimsleur cantonese 100% working cracked release by under seh team.lnk

This is the main reason your computer is infected. Visiting crack sites/warez sites - and other questionable/illegal sites is always a risk. Even a single click on the site can drop multiple forms of very serious malware, many of which disable your onboard protection, and System Restore.

If you install the cracked software, you are running executable files from these dubious, unknown sources. You are in effect giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over the operation of your computer.

In 2006, a study revealed that 59% of keygens and crack tools downloaded from peer-to-peer networks contained malicious or "unwanted" software.

Additionally, cracked programs are illegal. As the log(s) you've posted indicate, you've used one or more of the above, we will not provide you with any help. Consequently, this topic will be closed and archived.

We do NOT knowingly provide help for anyone using any form of cracked software and/or Operating Systems.

In using the crack, the 'cracker' has broken the 'End User Licence Agreement' (EULA) of the product concerned.

The distribution and use of cracked copies is illegal in almost every developed country.

You will need to go elsewhere if you wish to have your problem resolved.

As most other forums have the same policy, your best option is to format and re-install your operating system and install programs from legitimate sources.

Well I'm sorry but since you have evidence of cracked or pirated software you're using on the system I have no choice but to close this thread now.

HiJack This! Forum Policy

We will not be party to obvious use of key gens, cracks, warez or other illegal means of downloading software, music, videos ect. This means no P2P evidence will be supported. Logs that show these in them, will given the option to remove the P2P items. Keygens, cracks, warez and similar will have the thread closed period. It's theft and against the law.
