question about "Quarantined and deleted successfully"

Recommended Posts

I use malware bytes free on demand scanning for the desktops I have. I have a paid version for a netbook I have. One reason i put off buying a paid version was because of confusion I had about false positives. With the free on demand scan I would check this section of forum to see if there were false positives being reported, and if they did turn out to be false positives, I would not run a scan until a new update came out with the correction. It just meant less for me to be concerned about, not knowing much about computers.

My question now is, in regards to the term "Quarantined and deleted successfully" that i see in some of the logs posted here. When this is in the log after a scan, is the file actually "deleted" or always just put in the quarantined section only, and the "deleted" only refers to the file not being in the active part of the computer?

My concern is with the paid version running all the time, would a false positive actually be deleted. If it were and it turned out to be a file that was needed, I probably would not know how to find the file and upload it.

So is there a setting where everything can just be put into quarantine (but not deleted, so i could restore it from there if need be)? Or does "Quarantined and deleted successfully" really only mean put into quarantine, and nothing is ever automatically deleted in a scan. It is only deleted if i go into the quarantine section and choose to delete it from there?

Both Free and PRO versions act identically in all operations with regards to detection\removal and quarantining.

When a detection is put into quarantine it is removed from the system and is no longer any threat. The only way it goes back on the system is if you manually restore it.

If you elect to delete it from quarantine, it is wiped off the system is unrecoverable.

False\positives are unavoidable and every security tool produces them.

So nothing is automatically actually deleted? Only moved to quarantine, where it can be manually deleted by me, if I choose to?

The phrase "quarantined and deleted successfully" is what i was asking about. When that phrase comes up after the scan, was the file already deleted? Or was it just put into quarantine, where I can wait and decide if i want to delete it or restore it?

exile360 and TeMerc have both fully covered what happens here; perhaps if you think in terms of the original file having been removed from the original location and before being deleted a copy is made and put into the quarantine folder which then becomes a holding place from where that file may be deleted or if you choose restored to where it was originally found might make it somewhat clearer. The file is no longer accessible by the OS and poses no threat while it's in MBAM's quarantine folder.

I can see that the brevity of the wording "quarantined and deleted successfully" might raise a question mark in one's mind. B)
