Real-Time Protection causing camera stuttering, work around - v4.5.14

Recommended Posts

Summary:
Real-Time Protection causes cameras plugged into Elgato Cam Link Pro to stutter every 10-13 seconds

Current Work Around:
Disable some or all of real-time protection while using cameras linked through the Elgato card.  I systematically tested each real-time module individually and found on my system, only the ransomware protection causes the issue. Could be different for others.

Permanent Fix:
? - not sure if there is one available yet without elgato and/or mbam patching software and drivers

Notes:
0 - The Camera is stuttering in multiple pieces of software - OBS and Elgato's own 4k software are the two I have and use.
1 - The Cam Link Pro is an internal PCI-E card attached directly to the motherboard
2 - This issue DID NOT EXIST when using an elgato HD 60 S, which is an external USB connected capture card.
3 - I was lucky enough to find this reddit post which pointed me at the work around:

https://www.reddit.com/r/elgato/comments/uvkcl7/issue_regarding_periodic_stutter_on_camlink_pro/

Other Notes:

I just wanted to say that I love to see the progress that MBAM has made over the years. Back when I worked in IT, MBAM was a part of my pc cleaning toolkit and helped me resurrect many client systems from dire situations.

I would exclude the program folders from the camera software and the other programs that are using the feed from the camera.

Thanks for your reply! The only issue with this is I have the streaming/recording software (OBS Studio) excluded already.

I don't actually use the Elgato software for the card b/c OBS can interface directly with the hardware/see the camera feed.

If there is another piece of software I should exclude, I'm happy to try it.

Not according to your log. OBS is not excluded.

I would exclude the Elgato folders as well. If you are recording the stream, I would exclude the output folder of the recording.

Can you please do the following? @AhabTheGamer

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click the CLEAN button and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Malwarebytes
  • NOTE: Please have patience as it can take a while to remove and reinstall. The computer will restart to complete

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine

good morning and thanks for the rapid replies!

I've ran the cleaning tool as instructed, but I'm embarrassed to admit I'm not sure I did it correctly. The cleaning tool prompted me if I wanted to reinstall MBAM right as it finished, and it did reinstall, but there was a failure to reinstall message after I finished installing MBAM. Due to that, I've also added the clean results text as well as the log run after I rebooted.

For the sake of troubleshooting, I have not re-added any whitelisted programs/folders that I had prior to the cleaning.

I have tested the camera and there is still a freeze every 10-13 seconds

the same workaround addressed the issue - for me that is disabling ransomware protection under the real-time protection section.

Please try uninstalling the following, then restart the computer to test again.

Bonjour
Java SE Development Kit 8 Update 20 (64-bit)

We could also do some generic clean up of the computer. It is running a lot of items on startup and doesn't look like it's been cleaned in a while.

Let me know if interested in doing some clean up of the computer @AhabTheGamer

removed those two items

added the exclusions for the OBS folders

still have the stutter. stutter goes away when I disable ransomeware protection.

I'd be interested in some cleanup, but don't take the program list too literally. I've slipstreamed this windows installation into quite a few systems over the years, and while I've done quite a bit of housekeeping each time, I didnt bother with smaller things.  Thats why you see the bonjour and java dev stuff from 10+ years ago.

Please review the following and remove any programs you do not need, or use. All of these programs will run if you manually run them. Often times there is no need to run all these program every single time the computer starts.

You can use Task Manager to manage some of them. If wanted you could also use Microsoft Autoruns

Please run the following fix which will do an extensive clean up of the system.

Once the fix has been completed, please attach the file FIXLOG.TXT to your next reply

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop or location where you ran FRST from.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Please make sure you disable any real-time antivirus or security software before running this script. Once completed, make sure you re-enable it.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or wherever you ran FRST from. Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

NOTE-1:  This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files. It will also run a disk check on the restart to ensure disk integrity. Depending on the speed of your computer this fix may take 30 minutes or more.

NOTE-2: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications will be automatically closed. Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies will also be removed. The use of an external password manager is highly recommended instead of using your browser to store passwords.

NOTE-3: As part of this fix it will also reset the network to default settings including the firewall. If you have custom firewall rules you need to save please export or save them first before running this fix.

The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome, and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Discord cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

Thanks

good evening! been a long weekend for me and a long stream last night, so won't be able to get to these items just yet.

I wanted to comment on some of the things you have listed -

1 - Acronis runs every night, makes a complete image backup of my system to an external hard drive, so I don't want to do anything to that. I should probably get a more updated version.
2 - anydesk - I leave it set to autorun on startup b/c I need it randomly when I'm not physically at this workstation. While I don't use it frequently, I need it on and running for those random times I do need it (few times a week).

Advanced - thanks for that file, i'll run it tomorrow morning.  It this just the general clean up you mentioned, or is this trying to get to a place where the primary issue of my post is fixed?

No, if Acronis is working well for you then I would not change it. Newer versions are so bloated that I don't recommend Acronis anymore. I used to recommend it. So, only look at a newer version if you're having issues with backup or restores.

No rush, post back when ready @AhabTheGamer

ran FRST, file attached.

regarding acronis - the version I have works well enough. Is there a different recommended piece of software that will image my system similar to what I have now, but is a more recent release? I'd rather not get newer acronis versions if they're that bloated. I hate bloatware.

That looks to have been a pretty good run.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

For backup software we have the following link

Let me have you run the following @AhabTheGamer

SecurityCheck by glax24

I would like you to run a tool named SecurityCheck to inquire about the current security update status of some applications.

  • Download SecurityCheck by glax24: https://tools.safezone.cc/glax24/SecurityCheck/SecurityCheck.exe
  • If Microsoft SmartScreen blocks the download, click through to save the file
  • This tool is safe.   Smartscreen is overly sensitive.
  • If SmartScreen blocks the file from running click on More info and Run anyway
  • Right-click  with your mouse on the Securitycheck.exe  and select "Run as administrator"  and reply YES to allow to run & go forward
  • Wait for the scan to finish. It will open a text file named SecurityCheck.txt Close the file.  Attach it with your next reply.
  • You can find this file in a folder called SecurityCheck, C:\SecurityCheck\SecurityCheck.txt

i've cleaned off everything that wasn't used/up-to-date. I do have a windows patch to install, but its a whole new win10 version which just released today, and I'm not comfortable installing that yet, I normally give a brand new version a few days for the early adopters to deal with the bugs.

Just circling back - I still have this issue with MBAM, where my camera freezes every 10-13 seconds while the ransomeware real-time protection is enabled. I've tried the camera in all four ports of my cam link pro.

Elgato has sent my ticket to development on their end to see whats going on.  Any other things we can try with MBAM?

Advanced - I'm going to run through this in a bit. With regards to the repair, will it reset my firewall rules? Will it reset my network stack again (thereby removing my static IP)?
