Ransomware protection disabled after Windows update

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Last night before I was going to bed, Windows has an update so I selected "Update and Shutdown" before heading to bed. However this morning I realized my PC was still on. Confused, I logged in to shut it down until I noticed the Malwarebytes icon on the bottom right has the warning symbol on it, so I immediately opened it and everything was fine except the Ransomware Protection option was turned off. I was able to turn it back on with no problems and am currently running a full scan on my PC. I'm very paranoid when it comes to viruses, so maybe I'm overthinking this but I feel like this is too strange to not be something.

Thank you in advance for helping.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

I suggest turning off fast startup in Windows. Then restart.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-turn-off-fast-startup-windows-10-a.html

Fast Start can at times cause programs including Malwarebytes to not function correctly.

So this is just fast startup messing with Malwarebytes? If so that's a massive relief.

In easy terms to understand

Shutdown = Sleep (does not count as a restart) (this only applies if you have Fast Startup Enabled)

Restart = It will restart and apply any updates needed and take care of pending restart messages

Fast Startup is a hybrid sleep-mode that often causes issues. That is why we suggest that you turn it off.

Then restart the computer one time and all should be good again as far as having it turned off. Then when you shut down the computer it REALLY shuts down instead of Sleeping.

The logs are not indicating any obvious real issues. There are a few generic failures but they could be temporary in nature.

Let's go ahead and do some clean-up work and remove the tools and logs we've run.

Please download KpRm by kernel-panik and save it to your desktop.

  • right-click kprm_(version).exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Read and accept the disclaimer.
  • When the tool opens, ensure all boxes under Actions are checked.
  • Under Delete Quarantines select Delete Now, then click Run.
  • Once complete, click OK.
  • A log will open in Notepad titled kprm-(date).txt.
  • Please attach that file to your next reply. (not compulsory)

Just want to check before doing this, is this required to do? I'm a little wary towards giving a program administrator control especially when I don't know the program. I'm probably being paranoid but it still makes me nervous. If this is indeed required though, I'll do it, I just want to make sure.

No, do not need to run it.

I would suggest you review the other advice though, especially about backups

Cheers

Also, before this thread is done, I want to ask. I am currently using both OneDrive and Google drive to backup my important files. As well as an external hard drive holding whatever I can't fit on either. Does that suffice for backups or should I try something else?

If those files on the external are not also on the computer you do not have a true backup.

Two separate locations are a true backup. Some also have a third off site.

If something goes wrong, it is best to have an image (updated at least monthly) on an external drive.

Though the Cloud is a good method to back up your personal files. If you have a lot of them and may need them quickly, the Cloud is not always quick at recovering large amounts of data.

It also depends on how critical the data is to you. Myself, I really like having my own local personal copy of data on an external USB drive.

Today a 5TB USB3 drive can be had for around $100 which is more than enough for most home users. They do make smaller drives but for the cost I just go with the 5TB

Then you can use software such as Macrium Reflect to do an image backup of the entire system. Then a restore can be made at any time as well
