Hello

Can anyone advise of there is anything I can do to prevent excessive CPU usage and overheating when MB runs a regular scan on my PC?

Sometimes I have to terminate a scan because the CPU temperature approaches 80oC. Typically a scan will check 300, 000 items in approximately 8 minutes upon boot-up or late at night.

I use MB 4.5.11.202, update version package 1.0.57785, component package version 1.0.1716. I believe these to be current versions and the product is, excepting this issue, appears to be working properly.

My PC is running Windows 10.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed. 
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

That is by design on a Manual scan. You are not supposed to be doing ANYTHING else with the computer during that scan. It is designed to complete the scan as quick as possible.

You should be doing only a threat scan with NO non default options enabled like rootkit scanning or expert system algorithms enabled..

You should not be doing full drive scans on any regular basis.

Now all of the above being said....

However, if your computer is starting to overheat from an antivirus scan then you probably need to investigate what may be wrong with the hardware.

Is this a Desktop or Laptop?

When is the last time you opened the computer up and cleaned out all the dust bunnies?

How old is the computer?

 

To begin, please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained are safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply

The scans I refer to are Threat scans that MB itself runs according to its scheduler, i.e. late at night at about 02 45 hrs or at boot-up. 

As I said, typically a scan will check 300, 000 items in approximately 8 minutes upon boot-up or late at night. I tend to work during the night so may have a number of applications active when a scan starts, but it is MB which causes the issue described above.

These scans are run with default options throughout.

Lastly, I do not run "full drive scans on any regular basis."

I would recommend that we first try the following and do a CLEAN removal and reinstall of Malwarebytes and go from there.

I still say though that if running a scan is causing overheating than the underlying system is having issues. I can do a Full custom scan that runs for hours and does not overheat any of my systems.

 

 

 

Can you please do the following?

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click the CLEAN button and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall Malwarebytes
  • NOTE: Please have patience as it can take a while to remove and reinstall. The computer will restart to complete

After the restart please do the following

  • Run the MBST Support Tool
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine
  • A zip file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your desktop, please upload that file on your next reply
