Malware not removed by AdwCleaner 8.3.1

Recommended Posts

My pc froze the other day and I ran a malwarebytes scan and it found nothing.  I ran a windows defender scan and it found nothing.  I ran an AdwCleaner scan and it found a chrome browser extension and quarantined it.  It closes my chrome browser so when I restart it and run the same scan, it finds it again.  Not sure what to do.  I downloaded the adwcleaner today (3/16/2022) from the chrome webstore.  Here's what the log says from the adwcleaner.  I disabled and removed all extensions previous to doing this and I also uninstalled and installed chrome again.  It didn't help.  Not sure what else do do.

I followed the steps to turn off sync, cleared the sync data and ran the adwcleaner again with sync turned off, it said it removed it (but it doesn't show up in quarantine).  After that it shuts down chrome so I start it again and run the cleaner again and it finds it again.

What can I do now?  Sync is still turned off and the cleaner keeps finding it.

Sorry for the delay and thank you for the logs. This is a valid detection and cleaning Google Chrome should have helped remove it but we'll go ahead and try some other tools to help us clean up the computer. @Jims13

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.
Temporarily disable your antivirus or other security software first. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
Temporarily disable Microsoft SmartScreen to download software below if needed. Make sure to turn it back on once the scans are completed.
If you still have trouble downloading the software please click on Reveal Hidden Contents below for examples of how to allow the download.

When downloading with some browsers you may see a different style of screens that may block FRST from downloading. The program is safe and used hundreds of times a week by many users.

Example of Microsoft Edge blocking the download

STEP 01

  • If you already have Malwarebytes installed then open Malwarebytes and click on the Scan button. It will automatically check for updates and run a Threat Scan.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and select Scan and let it run.
  • Once the scan is completed make sure you have it quarantine any detections it finds.
  • If no detections were found click on the Save results drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If there were detections then once the quarantine has completed click on the View report button, Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If the computer restarted to quarantine you can access the logs from the Detection History, then the History tab. Highlight the most recent scan and double-click to open it. Then click the Export drop-down, then the Export to TXT  button, and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know in your next reply that the scanner would not run.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Double-click to run the program
  • Accept the End User License Agreement.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, if items are found please click Quarantine.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Attach or Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here each time
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.
  • On your next reply, you should be attaching frst.txt and additions.txt to your post, every time.

Thanks

ok.  I've done all the steps and I noticed a few things.

I've run the malwarebytes scan many times and it didn't find anything.  It didn't find anything this time either.  You didn't tell me whether to attach the cleaner or the scan log, so I attached both.

I've also ran the adwCleaner app, but this time, I chose to quarantine the dell support preinstalled apps that it found.  Previously, I never did that since Dell just recently installed them for me.  (I called them for support.)  This was the first time it actually quarantined the files and asked me to reboot, even though I've always asked that the chrome extension should be quarantined.  Sounds like a bug to me.

I also ran that last software and I've attached any logs I can think of attaching.

Thanks for the help.

It looks like you're probably a Developer for Java - just an FYI that running older versions of Java can put your computer at a higher risk for possible infection. Though in some cases one has to use older software in order to support older applications. Just pointing it out so that you can make a wise choice for yourself.

Java(TM) SE Development Kit 11.0.12 (64-bit)
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 17 (64-bit)
JetBrains Toolbox

The computer is also experiencing some faulting applications. We should probably at least do some generic clean up and then monitor to see if additional actions is required.

If you're no longer using the Canon printer stuff from 2012 you might want to remove it

HKLM\...\Print\Monitors\Canon BJ FAX Language Monitor MX920 series: C:\Windows\system32\CNCALBL.DLL [303104 2012-09-21] (Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher -> CANON INC.)

Would you like to run a General Clean up script?

Yea, I can run a clean up script, but some of that stuff I need.  Yes, I do have a very old printer.  It works, so I don't replace it.  Plus I have a lot of ink for it.  I don't need the FAX part.  I don't have an analog line for it.

I need java 11 because it's compatible with the wintel hadoop spark program I use for training, since I'm in data engineering.  Is that a concern?  Maybe I could look into if a more modern version is supported for spark.

I recently installed the support assist from dell.  Do you think that's a problem?  I see some files were removed from there.  It does seem to run ok, though.

Also, I had some services disabled for a while because I was concerned about being hacked and I don't really know that much about cybersecurity.  I recently enabled them so some of those messages might be about that.  Sorry.

Thanks for the help.

Nope, no harm in running the older stuff if you need it for work.

If all is working well for you at this time we can leave things as they are.

Probably best to make sure you have good solid backups of your system and data though in case something were to happen.

How is the computer running now?

Are there any other concerns with malware at this time?
