Kindly understand that I do need reports from your system.  I need the FRST  ( Farbar) reports FRST.txt + Addition.txt.  I would also like a copy of the last scan run report from Malwarebytes.

In order to begin to help you properly, I will need a diagnostic report in order to review & diagnose.
Specifically the FRST Farbar diagnostic report.  It is safe to get & use.
https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039025013-Run-Farbar-Recovery-Scan-Tool-to-gather-logs

Attach FRST.txt + Addition.txt with your reply.  You may if you wish, ZIP the 2 into a zip file & then attach.
{ just please do not copy, paste their contents in main body of reply box here.)

I look forward to being able to review the reports.  To make clear some points.

  • This case may take a few different reports and or tools.
  • The FRST is a trusted, known, respected tool widely in use in the computer security field, as are other tools I may guide you to.
  • I and we here guide you to known, trusted tools.
  • the "make changes" is a canned prompt by Windows ( a generic one & one that needs simplification). It kicks in when you start a EXE file. It is really a security prompt, more like, do you want to allow this to run.
  • Have faith in this helper

Always just only "ATTACH" report files as we go along on this case.

  • To send  ( upload)   attachments please click the "ADD Files"  link . Then browse to where your file is located and select it and click the Open button.

Thank you for the reports. I do notice your machine has 'Roguekiller'. Please do not run that on your own. Please do not run any other tools either.

I will guide you along on looking for potential malware. Lets keep these principles as we go along.

  • Removing malware can be unpredictable
  • ...things can go very wrong!
  • Backup
  • any files that cannot be replaced. You can copy them to a CD/DVD, external drive or a USB-storage drive or flash/thumb drive
  • Please don't run any other scans, download, install or uninstall any programs while I'm working with you.
  • Only run the tools I guide you to.
  • Do not run online games while case is on-going. Do not do any free-wheeling web-surfing.
  • The removal of malware isn't instantaneous, please be patient.
  • Please stick with me until I give you the "all clear".

If I have not replied to your last post after 36 hours, please then send me a P M

This ought to take something in the range of 15 - 25 minutes tops, depending on hardware speed.

get & run the Malwarebytes MBAR anti-rootkit tool to do 1 run with it.

Disregard the title subject of the topic.

Run the MBAR tool as listed here

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/198907-requested-resource-is-in-use-error-unable-to-start-malwarebytes

when done, I need the MBAR logs.

Upon completion of the scan or after the reboot, two files named mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt will be created.

Both files can be found in the extracted MBAR folder on your Desktop.

Please attach both files in your next reply.

Thank you. The MBAR anti-rootkit reports no malware present.

  • Please take a moment and let me know if possibly you are getting other help at another help forum.
  • Please let me know if some of repair or fix was done on 11 January.
  • Please let me know if Hitmanpro has made some fixes
  • Let me know if you used Roguekiller and made some changes
  • Did you only use Autoruns to just do a visual review ?

For your information, I am in the process of reviewing the earlier reports.  I am planning to have a new next step for you.

Do you have any "path location" for this suspected "fileless" ?  Do you have a suspected "file-name" of the suspected "fileless" ?

and, Did you in fact attempt some sort of "clean install windows" ? ?   if yes, can you provide a broad outline of how you went about doing that.

By the way, I would not rely on "Reddit" for getting guidance on Windows issues or malware / security advice.  This forum here and a few other specialized forums are more reliable. Just please be sure to not be seeking help at another venue during this case being active here.

Here are the next suggested action steps:

  • If you have questions on a procedure I outline, please then stop and ask me first.
  • If you run into a hitch, stop and ask me first
  • Please do not do any fixes on your own while this case is on-going
  • Please do not do any free-wheeling web surfing

Please  set File Explorer to SHOW ALL folders, all files, including Hidden ones.  Use OPTION ONE or TWO of this article

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7078-turn-off-show-all-folders-windows-10-navigation-pane.html

[    2    ]

Start Malwarebytes. Click Settings ( gear ) icon. Next, lets make real sure that Malwarebytes does NOT register with Windows Security Center

Click the Security Tab. Scroll down to

"Windows Security Center"

Click the selection to the left  for the line "Always register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center".
{ We want that to be set as Off   .... be sure that line's  radio-button selection is all the way to the Left.  thanks. }

This will not affect any real-time protection of the Malwarebytes for Windows    😃.

Close Malwarebytes.

would suggest that you do this next scan. This is a known respected tool. It will scan for viruses as well as for potentially unwanted applications.   ( P U A  or  P U P ).

I would suggest a free scan with the ESET Online Scanner.  This will be another check for viruses, other malware, adwares, & potentially unwanted applications.

Go to https://download.eset.com/com/eset/tools/online_scanner/latest/esetonlinescanner.exe

It will start a download of "esetonlinescanner.exe"

  • Save the file to your system, such as the Downloads folder, or else to the Desktop.
  • Go to the saved file, and double click it to get it started.

  • When presented with the initial ESET options, click on "Computer Scan".
  • Next, when prompted by Windows, allow it to start by clicking Yes
  • When prompted for scan type, Click on Full scan

Look at & tick ( select ) the radio selection "Enable ESET to detect and quarantine potentially unwanted applications" and click on Start scan button.

  • Have patience. The entire process may take an hour or more. There is an initial update download.

There is a progress window display. You may step away from machine &. Let it be.

You should ignore all prompts to get the ESET antivirus software program. ( e.g. their standard program). You do not need to buy or get or install anything else.

  • When the scan is completed, if something was found, it will show a screen with the number of detected items. If so, click the button marked “View detected results”.
  • Click The blue Save scan log to save the log.

If something was removed and you know it is a false finding, you may click on the blue ”Restore cleaned files” ( in blue, at bottom).

Press Continue when all done.

You should decline the offer for “periodic scanning”.   ( if offered)

Please make sure you attach the log report.

YES  I can help.  If the ESET Online started then ended, lets try a different tool.

Patience & persistence are called for.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free Microsoft stand-alone virus scanner that can be used to scan for & remove malware or potentially unwanted software from a system.

The download links & the how-to-run-the tool are at this link at Microsoft

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/intelligence/safety-scanner-download

Look on Scan Options & select  FULL scan.

Then start the scan. Have lots of patience. It may take several hours.

  • Once you see it has started, take a long long break;  walk away.  Do not pay credence if you see some intermediate early flash messages on screen display.  The only things that count are the End result at the end of the run.

Let me know the result of this.    This is likely to run for many hours   ( depending on number of files on your machine & the speed of hardware.)

The log is named MSERT.log

the log will be at

Windows\debug\msert.log

Please attach that log with your reply.
